Duties and Responsibilities
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Industry and Economy Division works with International and nongovernmental organizations, national and local governments, business and industry to develop and implement policies, strategies and practices that are cleaner and safer, incorporate environmental costs, use natural resources efficiently, reduce pollution and risks for humans and the environment, and enable the implementation of conventions and international agreements. Located within the UN Environment Programme Industry and Economy Division, the Resources and Markets Branch seeks to conserve the environment, reduce poverty, and promote sustainable development by enhancing the capacity of governments, businesses, and civil society to integrate environmental considerations into economic, trade, and financial policies and practices in accordance with integrated policy-making approaches of sustainable development. Over the past years, the focus of Resources and Markets Branch has been UNEP’s work related to Green Economy. Within the Branch, the Economic and Trade Policy Unit (ETPU) leads research endeavors, delivers comprehensive capacity building support, and offers advisory services to facilitate the transition towards inclusive and environmentally sustainable economies. The communication intern will have a crucial role in supporting the design and implementation of communication strategies and products to highlight achievements while motivating action in line with the unit's objectives. Purpose The Intern will support to communicate the ETPU’s mission, initiatives, and achievements to various stakeholders, including governments, media outlets, partner organizations, and the general public. The responsibilities will involve developing and implementing communication products, crafting engaging content such as press releases, reports, and multimedia materials, managing social media platforms, and supporting the organization of events and awareness raising activities to inspire a diverse audience about the importance of sustainable economic development. The Intern will aid in the accurate and effective dissemination of UNEP's messages aimed at promoting economic change towards sustainability, which includes incorporating green concerns into governmental strategies and plans, with the goal of inspiring action and fostering positive environmental outcomes. The internship provides an opportunity to increase understanding of relevant economic development issues at the international level by directly involving interns in the work of the organization and application of its principles, programs and strategies. This recruitment is for an internship position within RMB’s Economic and Trade Policy Unit. This internship expected duration is six (6) months and offers a full-time, unpaid commitment, with interns dedicating 35-40 hours per week. We're open to hybrid work arrangements and encourage candidates passionate about driving positive environmental change to join our team. Please note that financial support for travel, visas, accommodation, and living expenses is not provided by the United Nations, and interns are responsible for arranging and covering these expenses. This recruitment is for an internship position within RMB’s Economic and Trade Policy Unit (ETPU). The ETPU internship is for six (6) months. The Internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned. Tasks: • Provide support to communication activities within ETPU, such as the development of brochures, newsletters, PowerPoint slide decks, and other communication products. • ETPU Outreach - Support the implementation of outreach strategies to raise ETPU’s profile in the development and environment fields. • Contribute to the Fostering collaboration and partnership between institutions and by identifying areas of common interest. • Gather and track news and updates related to financial and economic transformations, including significant decisions and developments, for the creation of weekly internal briefings. • Assist in managing and promotion of the social media tools used by ETPU contributing to UNEP's public information campaigns as appropriate. • Assist in the design and production of information material for the various outreach events. • Provide assistance in maintaining and updating website ensuring that content remains relevant and engaging to the target audience. . • Contribute to the formulation of a comprehensive communications strategy tailored specifically to ETPU’s objectives and target audience. • Supporting production of communications products and donor-facing materials, including the creation of photo and video assets for use by regional and country partners. • Review and offer feedback on project and program-related knowledge products and publications to ensure accuracy and effectiveness in conveying key messages related to finance and economic transformation.
Qualifications/special skills
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) in communication, media studies, journalism; b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum bachelor's level or equivalent); c. Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation. Be computer literate in standard software applications. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.
