Mission and objectives

As the United Nations lead agency on international development, UNDP works in 170 countries and territories to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality. We help countries to develop policies, leadership skills, partnering abilities, institutional capabilities, and to build resilience to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. Our work is concentrated in three focus areas; sustainable development, democratic governance and peace building, and climate and disaster resilience.

Context

The Mayors for Economic Growth (M4EG) is an initiative of the European Union (EU) that aims to support mayors and municipalities to become active facilitators for economic growth and job creation in their local communities. The M4EG currently has more than 400 local authorities in its regional network in the Eastern Partnership (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine). At the end of 2022, the M4EG launched the Urban Learning Center (ULC) together with Arup, Climate KIC, and TalTech which provides capacity-building resources to local governments to promote economic growth and sustainable urban development. For more information about the M4EG: https://eum4eg.com/ . The Urban Learning Center (ULC) brings new learning and networking opportunities within the M4EG network and beyond providing an enabling learning ecosystem. This includes a new generation of Local Economic Development Plans, moving from a linear project to a ‘portfolio of options’ approach to tackling complex challenges, and innovation mentoring and seed-funds. For more information about the ULC: https://www.sparkblue.org/urbanlearningcenter . Through this assignment, the aim is to improve the user-friendliness and visual aspects of the ULC platform. The platform is utilised by 400+ municipalities in the Eastern Partnership and will be showcased at the upcoming World Cities Summit in Singapore 2-4 June 2024.
