Local staff are very important to the United Nations and other International Organizations as they are most familiar with the country and regions the projects are happening in, hence better cultural sensitivity and awareness. For many professionals, their careers start at Junior Officers, Volunteer or Internship level. Some intentionally choose to stay local, striving to impact their countries, protecting and increasing human rights in their local communities.

Some might argue that there are gaps between locally recruited and International staff, however, many changes are being made by governments and international organizations for local capacity building. Apart from being a great way to kickstart your career in this sector and network, local staff tend to have more job security when it comes to funded projects.

Below are some of the grade levels for locally recruited staff.
