Organizational Setting
The FAO Subregional Office for the Pacific Islands (SAP) was established in 1996 in Samoa to coordinate FAO work in 13 member countries in the Pacific subregion - Cook Islands, Fiji, Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Republic of the Marshall Islands, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu, Vanuatu, and one Associate Member, Tokelau. SAP is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing programmes and projects to address food security, nutrition, agriculture, and rural development priorities. It develops and maintains relations with subregion wide institutions and entities. The Subregional Office is a subsidiary of FAO’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific (RAP) in Bangkok.
FAO is implementing the following UN Joint Programmes (JPs)\:
Accelerating SDG achievement through digital transformation to strengthen community resilience in Micronesia. This JP aims to leverage digital transformation to accelerate the achievement of the SDGs and strengthen community resilience in the Micronesian countries. The JP is implemented by a partnership of FAO, the International Labour Organization (ILO), United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS), United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF). ITU is the lead.
Utilising digitalization to accelerate the achievement of SDGs in the Cook Islands. The JP aims to deliver long-term sustainable change that includes (i) increased agricultural productivity and local value/market chains, (ii) strengthened disaster resilience and food security, and (iii) improved nutrition, particularly for women and children. These outcomes will be achieved through the development and implementation of a digital strategy to positively catalyze the agri-food systems value chain, digital economy, climate change management and nutrition. The JP is implemented by a partnership of FAO, UNICEF and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). FAO is the lead.
Innovative and Sustainable Policy and Digital Solutions to Catalyse Enhanced Food and Livelihood Security in Niue. The objective of the Joint Programme is to accelerate the SDGs through integrated programming with emphasis on Leaving No One Behind. The JP is implemented by a partnership of FAO, UNICEF and UNDP. FAO is the lead.
Catalyzing the Samoa National Food Systems Transformation Agenda Through Collective Action. The objective of the JP is to accelerate the resilient transformation of the Samoa’s national food systems. The JP is implemented by a partnership of FAO, the World Food Programme (WFP) and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD). FAO is the lead
FAO is seeking a qualified candidate to provide coordination support for the JPs that it leads, but also for the implementation and reporting on all of the JPs. The candidate will be based in Apia, Samoa with field travels to the relevant countries when necessary. The candidate will provide technical coordination, monitoring, evaluation, reporting and resource mobilization support to the implementation of the projects.
Reporting Lines
The Project Coordinator will be under the overall supervision of the FAO Sub Regional Coordinator and the technical supervision of the Food and Nutrition Officer.
Technical Focus
The Project Coordinator will provide overall coordination for the successful implementation of the UNJPs for which FAO is the lead, while supporting the implementation of the other JPs for which FAO is not the lead. He/She will also provide critical input, technical support and decisive planning for the JP activities. He/she will be responsible of reporting and presentation of the activities to FAO SAP Management, the donor and the Resident Coordinators’ Offices (RCOs) whenever it is needed.
Tasks and responsibilities
• Act as FAO’s coordination focal point for the implementation of the UNJPs under overall guidance of the technical guidance of the Food and Nutrition Officer.
• Organize and attend technical meetings related to the UNJPs and ensure close collaboration and liaison with the three UN RCOs, regional organizations, NGOs, donors and government partners as appropriate.
• Coordinate correspondence to governments’ requests related to the JPs.
• Coordinate reporting and evaluation for the JPs.
• Coordinate the preparation of human-interest stories, press releases to promote public awareness about the JPs
• Contribute to partnership and resource mobilization as part of the exit strategies for the JPs.
• Participate in FAO Pacific multidisciplinary team meetings, as well as the planning of the 2024 Pacific SIDS Solutions Forum.
CANDIDATES WILL BE ASSESSED AGAINST THE FOLLOWING
Minimum Requirements
• Advanced university degree in Development Studies, Food and Nutrition Security, Agriculture, Fisheries, Rural Development, Business, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, or a related field or relevant experience
• At least 5 years of experience with at least two years from working with at least two UN agencies
• Working knowledge of English

Selection Criteria
• Experience in project coordination and implementation
• Experience or knowledge of UNJP coordination and reporting
• Experience working with the UN in the Pacific Small Island Developing States is required
