OVERVIEW OF THE FUNCTIONS OF THE POST
Background
On June 7, 2024, the United Nations proclaimed 2025 as the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ). The International Year of Quantum Science and Technology aims to raise awareness, promote collaboration, and drive advancements in the field of quantum science and technology globally.
Objective
To provide technical and logistical support for the implementation of the Opening Ceremony and coordinate various initiatives and activities under the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology.
Long Description
Under the overall authority of the Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences (ADG/SC), with guidance from the Director of the Division of Science Policy and Basic Sciences (PBS), and direct supervision from the Chief of the Section of Basic Sciences, Research, Innovation and Engineering, the consultant will play a key role in the technical preparation of the Opening Ceremony and support various initiatives and activities throughout the International Year under the UNESCO basic sciences and engineering programme. The consultant will be responsible for the following tasks:
1. Opening Ceremony Preparation:
- Work closely with the Event Planner to develop and oversee the technical aspects of the Opening Ceremony, including audio-visual requirements, stage setup, and coordination with all other UNESCO technical teams.
- Liaise with stakeholders, including speakers, sponsors, and participants, to ensure smooth execution of the event.
- Develop and maintain a detailed timeline for the preparation and execution of the Opening Ceremony.
- Provide detailed progress and final reports for the Opening Ceremony

2. Initiatives and Activities Coordination:
- Lead and coordinate the development and implementation of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology related programmes and activities, including contributing to drafting work plans, concept notes, organizing workshops, meetings, and capacity building and awareness raising activities aligned with the overall mission;
- Identify or respond to emerging issues, and develop strategies, programmes, or activities aligned with the mission of UNESCO and the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology;
- Engage and liaise with relevant stakeholders for project implementation and for fostering partnerships and fund-raising opportunities, including national governmental agencies, research institutes, universities, international organizations and/or programmes, and donor communities;
- Coordinate with UNESCO Science Networks, such as Category 2 Centres and UNESCO Chairs and UNITWIN Networks, to develop projects or webinars aligned with the mission of the International Year and provide assistance to the Centres and Chairs as requested;
- Prepare regular progress reports and a final report on the status of initiatives and activities, highlighting achievements and identifying any challenges.
3. Communication and Outreach:
- Support the promotion of the International Year through various communication channels, including social media, newsletters, and press releases.
- Develop content for promotional materials, including brochures, flyers, and website updates in English, and in other UN languages if applicable.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Education
Advanced degree in Basic Sciences, Engineering, or a related field.
Work experience
- 2-5 years of Proven experience in event management and logistics coordination.
- Experience in UN systems
Skill and competencies
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Experience in working with diverse stakeholders, including academia, industry and government organizations.
- Knowledge of quantum science and technology is highly desirable.
Language
- Excellent knowledge (spoken and written) of English
