Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Department of Global Communications (DGC) at UN Headquarters in New York. The incumbent reports to the Special Assistant to the Under-Secretary-General (USG) for Global Communications.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Public Information Officer may be responsible for the following duties: • Drafts, compiles, edits talking points, background notes and other supporting materials for the external and internal engagements of the Under-Secretary-General and other senior DGC staff. • Facilitates the production of departmental reports, and drafts, edits, and reviews inputs to intergovernmental bodies, including reports of the Secretary-General. • Oversees the production of specific types (e.g. print, audio, etc.) of communications products (e.g. podcasts, presentations, broadcast messages etc.). This includes proposing topics, undertaking research, determining target audiences, preparing production plans, writing drafts, obtaining clearances and finalizing texts, editing copy, and coordinating design approval, printing procedures and distribution. • Organizes and manages events. • Monitors and analyzes current events, public opinion and press, identifies issues and trends, and advises management on appropriate action/responses. • Sustains professional relationships with key constituencies. • Acts as focal point on specific issues, monitoring and reporting on developments, responding to inquiries, etc. • Provides guidance to, and may supervise, more junior staff. • Undertakes ad hoc assignments as needed.

Education
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in communication, journalism, international relations, public administration or related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

Work Experience
A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in public information, journalism, international relations, public administration or related area is required. Experience working at a front office is desirable. Work experience with United Nations or similar international organization policy, activities; programmes and Rules & Regulations is desirable. Relevant professional experience in writing, editing, or drafting documents is desirable. This can include experience in journalism, technical writing, or similar fields.
Languages
Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.
Assessment
Evaluation of qualified candidates will include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
