Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a leading protection agency with a mandate to protect, advocate and promote durable solutions for displacement affected populations.
DRC has been operating in Ukraine since 2014, currently DRC employs over 800 staff in Ukraine and will continue significant scale-up in 2024 to implement emergency response in the Protection, Livelihoods, Shelter/NFIs and Humanitarian Disarmament and Peacebuilding (humanitarian mine action) sectors, using direct interventions, support to duty bearers and civil society organizations (CSOs), and partnerships with CSOs. DRC will continue and adapt its durable solutions portfolio to the evolving context.
DRC is currently looking for a highly qualified Communication Specialist to join our team in Kyiv.
About the job
DEMAC - Diaspora Emergency Action & Coordination is a global initiative that works for a deeper understanding of diasporas as humanitarian actors and strives for better coordination between diaspora organizations, local networks and the institutional humanitarian system. DEMAC is hosted by The Danish Refugee Council and funded by USAID. The Communication Specialist will mainly provide support on internal and external communication for the DEMAC.
Your main duties and responsibilities will be:
Support for DEMAC's Communication Plan, Strategy, and Tools:
- Assist in implementing and enhancing DEMAC's communication strategy and plan to ensure continuous engagement with diaspora organizations and humanitarian agencies on DEMAC's digital platforms.
- Develop and draft relevant communication tools for diaspora organizations, including newsletters, factsheets, pamphlets, situation reports, etc.
- Plan, develop, and distribute newsletters focusing on diaspora humanitarianism to diaspora organizations, humanitarian agencies, donors, and other stakeholders.
- Assist in finalizing, formatting, and proofreading DEMAC research outputs in line with DEMAC's brand guidelines, collaborating with graphic designers, photographers, and print suppliers.
Management of DEMAC Communication Platforms:
- Take responsibility for all DEMAC's social media channels, ensuring the DEMAC Facebook, LinkedIn, X, and YouTube channel are kept up to date.
- Monitor information shared by diaspora organizations and, in consultation with these organizations, channel the most relevant content to the DEMAC website and social media pages.
- Engage with diasporas to gather relevant success stories or resources for DEMAC's digital platforms.
- Generate content for the DEMAC website, including human-interest stories, events, articles, etc.
- Create and disseminate One-Pagers, infographics, and social videos for DEMAC digital channels.
- Write press releases and liaise with media stakeholders.
- Monitor DEMAC's external visibility, including monthly and end-of-year website and social media statistics.
- Develop and oversee the production of DEMAC visibility materials, such as roll-ups, flyers, etc.
Support for DEMAC Coordination Team on Event Communication and Project Implementation:
- Prepare and implement extensive communication campaigns around DEMAC events, both offline and online.
- Collaborate closely with DEMAC Project Coordinators to identify and develop new communication tools, such as podcasts, videos with key research findings, human-interest stories, etc.
- Keep track of diaspora events, signaling speaking opportunities for DEMAC Project Coordinators.
- Provide support for proposal writing and donor reporting.
About you
To be successful in this role we expect you to have at least 3 years of experience in external communication, content creation, and outreach.
Moreover, we also expect the following:
- Relevant educational background in communications, public relations, digital communications, or social sciences, etc.
- Experience in relevant editing and design software, such as Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, etc.
- Experience in communications within a humanitarian or development setting is advantageous.
- Ability to work under pressure and with short timelines.
- Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving skills.
- Creative with an eye for culturally sensitive visuals.
- Excellent English and Ukrainian writing skills.

Salary and conditions will be in accordance with Danish Refugee Council’s Terms of Employment for national employees.
