Duties and Responsibilities

About UN-Habitat UN-Habitat, the United Nations Human Settlements Programme, is mandated by the UN General Assembly to promote socially and environmentally sustainable and resilient towns and cities. It is the focal point agency for all urbanization and human settlement matters within the UN system. UN-Habitat envisions well-planned, well-governed and efficient cities and towns, with adequate housing, infrastructure and universal access to employment and basic services such as water, energy, and sanitation. The Planning, Finance and Economy Section (PFES) of UN-Habitat supports countries in developing urban planning methods and systems that address current urbanization challenges. It promotes urban planning approaches to address urban expansion and transformation. Reporting and Communication The Associate Urban Planning Expert will be hired to collaborate closely with the Urban Lab and Global Public Space Programme team of PFES. He/she will be reporting to the Programme Management Officer. Duties and Responsibilities Under the overall supervision of the Programme Management Officer, the consultant will be responsible for the following duties: The overall role of this International Consultant is to coordinate and implement the joint project between UN-Habitat and GZPI. This includes carrying out research, case study and information collection, report writing, events organization, coordination with partners, communications, etc. to facilitate the implementation of the seminar. Additionally, the International Consultant will also support other cooperation, activities and initiatives either in China or out of China , including assisting the normative work and projects in relation to the focuses outlined in the agreement. The detailed duties of this International Consultant will therefore be the following: • Support the organisation of the international seminar taken place in Guangzhou and support the relevant research in relation to the thematic topic “Exploring Sustainable Pathways for Urban Regeneration and Revitalization in Historic Centres of Megacities”, including drafting and finalizing the report, facilitate follow-up and communication after the seminar completed. • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of the international seminar in Guangzhou on the theme: “Exploring Sustainable Pathways for Urban Regeneration and Revitalisation in Hisotric Centres for Megacities”, conduct and support thematic research aligned with the seminar’s objectives. Draft, review, and finalize the seminar report, ensuring timely follow-up actions and effective post-event communication with stakeholders. • Facilitate the technical exchange between the UN-Habitat team and the Guangzhou Sustainable Urban Planning and design Lab, organise relevant technical meetings to ensuring regular and effective communication. • Coordinate the collaboration with the donors and partners both externally and internally for this cooperation, including facilitating the timely and regular exchanges, organising coordination meetings, preparing supporting materials, etc. • Support the Global Public Space Programme, particularly through providing technical support on the normative work and facilitating building up the Chinese stakeholders network. • Contribute to pilot projects undertaken by the Urban Lab outside China, particularly in the areas of urban regeneration and green-blue infrastructure for climate mitigation and adaptation in alignment with project timelines and deliverables. • Support the planning and execution of joined events and related interlinked activities, ensuring seamless coordination and delivery. • Perform any additional tasks assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications/special skills

Advanced university degree (Master’s degree) in urban planning and design, such as architecture, urban planning, landscape architecture, engineering, urban study is required. A minimum of 2 years of progressive experience in the sustainable urban development and international development field is required. Experience of working in an urban planning institution is required. Experience of working with a Chinese government partner or working in the Chinese context is strongly preferred. Experience in developing strategies and guidelines for sustainable urban development related areas is preferred. Knowledge and experience in results-based management is desirable. Experience in coordinating with various stakeholders is desirable.

Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this advertised position Proficiency in verbal and written English and Chinese (mandarin) is required. Knowledge of another official United Nations language is desirable.
