To address the combined challenges related to managing human mobility as a result of different migration drivers, incl. climate change and environmental degradation, as well as the gaps in knowledge and migration data in North, East, and West Africa, the Climate Change and Migration Data Programme contributes to improved evidence-based migration management and reduced risk of irregular migration and displacement occurring, in the context of disasters, climate change and environmental degradation in countries of origin, transit and destination along key migration corridors in North, East, and West Africa.
In light of the continental nature of the programme, the intern will focus on the implementation of its activities at the North Africa level and broader MENA region, through supporting the programme’s activities related to policy, communication and outreach on climate change, human mobility, and youth empowerment.
Responsibilities
- Associate Programme Officer on Migration, Environment and Climate Change (MECC)
- Assist in developing capacity building initiatives and programs to support youth/early-career practitioners to become future negotiators and advocates of climate mobility in North Africa and MENA.
- Assist in expanding knowledge and awareness on human mobility in the context of disasters, climate change and environmental degradation through communication and informative materials.
- Assist in engaging in national and regional policy processes on climate action and youth.
- Assist in expanding youth networks working on climate change and human mobility across North Africa and the wider MENA region.
- Assist with operational aspects of the programme in conjunction with the implementing partners and offices, as relevant.
- Assist in coordinating with other IOM Missions in the region and beyond, as necessary, and;
- Undertake all other tasks as may be assigned.
Through the internship, the intern will become familiar with the International Organizations by working within the UN system and participating in various meetings with internal and external partners; the intern will experience hands-on communication and outreach activities, by assisting in program management and implementation; the intern will also obtain a deeper understanding on migration and climate mobility issues, its regional and national contexts in the MENA region through assisting the research and coordination activities and interaction with the Regional and National UN Network on Migration counterparts; by the end of the internship, the intern with have a better understanding on IOM’s work as the UN Migration Agency and how it interacts with the government, the UN agencies and all the relevant stakeholders who work in the area of migration and climate mobility.

- Appointment will be subject to certification that the candidate is medically fit for appointment, verification of residency, visa, and authorizations by the concerned Government, where applicable. Vaccination against COVID-19 will be required for IOM personnel who are hired or otherwise engaged by IOM. As part of the 1. mandatory medical entry on duty clearance, candidates may be requested to provide evidence of full vaccination. Interns engaged to work on a home-based internship who do not need to travel do not need to provide vaccination records.
- Depending on experience and location, interns are granted a small monthly stipend to help offset costs. Interns benefiting from an internship allowance or scholarship granted by his/her university or other sponsoring body that includes financial remuneration or credits for coursework will not be eligible for the stipend.
- IOM covers Interns against occupational accidents and illnesses under the Compensation Plan (CP), free of charge, for the duration of the assignment. IOM does not provide evacuation or medical insurance for reasons related to non-occupational accidents and illnesses. Interns are responsible for their own medical insurance for non-occupational accident or illness and will be required to provide written proof of such coverage before commencing work.
