Duties and Responsibilities

The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) Expert for Food Commodities will collaborate with the UNEP Copenhagen Climate Centre (UNEP-CCC) on life cycle assessments of different food crops and agricultural practices. The consultancy’s purpose is to conduct the co-design of the LCA framework, the co-development of the LCA and for carrying out a pilot study for selected commodities. The Expert is required for conducting the development of a lifecycle assessment framework and methodology for key food commodities (to be agreed on). Objectives: The consultancy has three objectives. First, defining the LCA framework scope; Second, developing the LCA framework and methodology for key food commodities (to be agreed on); Third, conducting a LCA pilot study and sensitivity analysis. for selected commodities. Output expectations: Output (WP)1: Map of commodity profiles, supporting consultations; Output (WP) 2: Identification of impact categories, components and agricultural factors, design of LCA-based footprints assessment methodology, mapping suitable LCA tools and databases; Output (WP) 3: Pilot study and sensitivity analysis on the impact factors for selected commodities, identification of impact reduction opportunities. Performance indicators: Quality of Analysis - Evaluation of the completeness and accuracy of the developed approach, including the level of detail and relevance to the project's objectives. Evaluation of the quality and completeness of deliverables based on predefined criteria and feedback from UNEP-CCC. Timeliness and Responsiveness - Meeting deadlines for the submission of deliverables and responsiveness to feedback from UNEP-CCC, demonstrating reliability. Clarity and Usability of Reports - Evaluation of the reports' clarity, coherence, and usefulness based on feedback from target users, ensuring the deliverables meet the project's objectives. The Expert will undertake a range of tasks and responsibilities to support the successful implementation of the project. These include defining the LCA framework scope, developing the LCA framework, conducting a LCA pilot study for selected commodities and sensitivity analysis, and reporting. Specifically, the Expert is responsible for mapping of commodity profiles, supporting consultations, identifying impact categories, components and agricultural factors, design of LCA-based footprints assessment methodology, mapping suitable LCA tools and databases, sensitivity analysis on the impact factors and identification of impact reduction opportunities. 1st deliverable – Submission of LCA framework scope inception report (WP1). 2nd deliverable – Submission of LCA framework report (WP2). 3rd deliverable – Submission of pilot study report (WP3). The consultant/individual contractor will report to Miriam Hinostroza – UNEP Program Officer.

Qualifications/special skills

A master´s degree or equivalent in environmental science, resource economics, or other relevant fields is required. - 5+ years of experience in the environmental sector. Academic and industrial experience in conducting LCAs is required. - Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary for preparing reports, and presentations, as well as for engaging with stakeholders and presenting complex information in a clear and understandable manner. - Proven LCA knowledge and skills are essential. Proven experience with evidence in developing LCA methodology design, analyzing LCA database and applying LCA modeling including Sima Pro is required.

Languages
