Duties and Responsibilities

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system's designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. The Latin America and the Caribbean Office (LACO) located in Panama City works closely with the 33 countries of the region - including 16 small island developing States, with a population of about 650 million people. The office works to serve the needs of the region and its activities are integrated into the work programs approved by the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA). UNEP Country Office in Brazil is a key development partner of the Brazilian government and supports national and sub-national public and private sector institutions and civil society to achieve a more sustainable and inclusive society by creating a new relationship between people and nature, and between economic growth and environmental sustainability. Under the direct supervision of the Representative, the intern(s) will support the implementation of the activities of the COP 30, World Environmental Day (WED) 2025, activities related to Brazil Office and deliver daily communications and translation activities. The intern will be supporting UNEP Brazil Country Office in the assistance of the Communication Team. More specifically, the job will entail the following tasks: • Contribute in engaging in strategic communications planning and processes that support UNEP’s mission, strengthen the visibility of the organization, and raise public awareness on environmental issues. • Contribute to maintain and regularly update the UNEP Brazil website as well as the UNEP Brazil social medias. • Collect background information and contribute to the preparation of pieces, infographics, newsletters, reports, and project documents related to the Office’s projects. • Maintain the office’s mailing list updated and contribute to the office network expansion strategies. • Contribute with Clipping. • Support the contact with the media to generate proactive and positive news coverage. • Assist in the organization of publications, data and files upon request. • Assist the Communication Focal Point in gathering information relevant to the Office Representative in the elaboration of documents and analysis. • Collect background information and contribute to the preparation of reports, project documents and working papers namely in environment-related sectors. • Prepare drafts of documents, correspondence, general reports and overview registry for the Communication Team. • Help develop graphic materials, edit audio-visual content, prepare PowerPoint and presentations, and other related activities when required. • Support the organization of workshops, seminars, and missions. • As required, translate press releases, opinion editorials and other documents from English to Portuguese or Portuguese to English. • Daily screen incoming correspondence and telephone calls, draft routine correspondence (in Portuguese, English and Spanish) and takes appropriate follow-up action. • Perform other clerical tasks as required. • Support other activities of the Country Office as requested. Interns are sought for a six-month internship period. The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (40 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the Office.

Qualifications/special skills

Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements: a. Be enrolled in a Master's Degree programme in Media and Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Advertisement, Marketing, Languages, Translation and or any relevant Communication field; OR b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a Bachelor degree program in Media and Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Advertisement, Marketing, Languages, Translation and or any relevant Communication field; OR c. Have graduated with a university degree in Media and Communication, Journalism, Public Relations, Advertisement, Marketing, Languages, Translation and or any relevant Communication field. - Be computer literate in standard software applications (MS Office). - Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; - Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views

Languages

Fluency in English and Portuguese are required. Knowledge of another UN official language is desirable.

Costs and arrangements for travel, visas, accommodation and living expenses are the responsibility of interns or their sponsoring institutions.
