Job Description
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) Cameroon implements humanitarian and development interventions in Douala, supporting communities affected by displacement, cross‑border mobility and environmental vulnerabilities. Communication plays a key role in documenting field activities, strengthening visibility, supporting donor engagement and enhancing community outreach.
Under the supervision of the National Outreach and Visibility Officer and in close collaboration with the field teams (Douala Suboffice), the Communication Intern will contribute to basic communication tasks including content gathering, visibility support, field reporting and organization of communication materials. The internship aims to develop the intern’s practical skills in humanitarian communication and field outreach while supporting the mission’s visibility and engagement efforts.
Responsibilities
- The overall objective of the internship is to support communication and visibility initiatives related to IOM activities in Douala.
The intern will contribute to the following specific objectives:
1. Content Collection and Field Reporting
Capture basic field visuals (photos, short videos) using a smartphone or camera.
Collect beneficiary quotes and short testimonies during field missions.
Support the drafting of simple field updates and short captions for social media or internal channels.
2. Visibility and Donor Communication
Assist in implementing visibility actions aligned with donor requirements.
Support the preparation of visibility materials (banners, branded items, consent forms).
Help ensure proper documentation of donor visibility efforts.
3. Content Management and Creation
Organize and maintain communication files, including photos, videos, notes and consent forms.
Support the creation of basic multimedia content such as graphics, infographics or short videos using beginner-friendly tools (e.g., Canva).
4. Community Engagement Support
Assist in communication-related community engagement activities.
Contribute to capturing positive stories and feedback from communities.
5. Internal Communication Support
Assist the field team in preparing short updates for internal information-sharing platforms.
Support the maintenance of simple communication logs and documentation tools.
Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The candidate should:
Be enrolled in the final academic year of Bachelor’s degree/ Master’s level or equivalent in an accredited academic institution of Communication, Public relation, Social Sciences, Political Science, journalism, or any relevant discipline;
Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);

SKILLS
Good knowledge of communication strategies and tools (internal and external)
Proficiency with digital tools and communication materials (posters, videos, flyers, visual content, etc.)
Ability to analyze and improve existing communication plans
Strong report writing and practical guide drafting skills
Ability to conduct interviews and consultations with various stakeholders (staff, donors, government and UN representatives)
Understanding of communication challenges in sensitive contexts (crisis, elections, security, etc.)
Familiarity with benchmarking, monitoring, and comparative analysis
Strong organizational and time management skills (ability to meet deadlines, plan over 12 weeks)
Initiative and autonomy in carrying out assignments
Ability to work collaboratively with different teams
Discretion and respect for confidentiality, especially in sensitive contexts
Experience or knowledge of the humanitarian sector or UN system
Ability to adapt communication to multicultural and multilingual contexts
Sensitivity to security and institutional neutrality issues.
