Country Director, Chad

N'Djamena

About Concern Worldwide

Concern Worldwide works with the world’s poorest people to tackle hunger and transform lives, working for a world where no one dies for want of safe, nutritious food. Their approach focuses on practical, intelligent solutions that save lives and build livelihoods.

For more than 40 years, they’ve been working in partnership with communities, combining their expertise with their local knowledge, an approach that enables families to tackle hunger and work their own way out of poverty.

Overview

You will implement a resilience programme in the east of the country, ensuring that Concern Worldwide learns from it at a national and international level, and is ready to replicate it elsewhere. You will also oversee expansion into a new area; almost certainly a programme in N’Djamena focused on the treatment of malnutrition (including prevention aspects) and you will help to deal with the practical issues of capacity and funding that will be required.

Equality is a particularly important theme and Concern Worldwide is finalising an equality strategy (with the help of the global technical adviser) which the Country Director will deliver. You will also develop an HR strategy covering equality, staff-retention and nationalising key positions.

Concern Worldwide has secured significant funding from DFID and is implementing its part of the multi-country integrated resilience programme BRACED (Building Resilience and Adaptation to Climate Extremes and Disasters), along with Tufts University’s Feinstein Centre and the World Agroforestry Centre (ICRAF). The scale of work will increase significantly, with the number of targeted villages rising from 35 to 91. 3 About you Position Brief Country Director - Chad Concern Worldwide Mission Talent, December 2015 f inding your talent i s our mi s s ion

About you

You have senior management experience with an international NGO (preferably in a conflict or post-conflict context) and can develop programmes, manage teams and deal with finance. You’re a relationship-builder who can establish links with funders, government and other NGOs and your people leadership means you can resolve internal conflicts, motivate colleagues and build trust.

If you’ve worked in the Sahel then you’ll know the importance of good cross-cultural awareness, patience and a sense of humour. You are willing to travel frequently and are resilient: able to live under fairly basic conditions and to make sound management decisions in difficult situations.

Fluency in French and English—both spoken and written—is essential, while Arabic would be an advantage.

Additional Information

The Country Director reports to the Regional Director and is responsible for the strategic development and management of the Concern Chad programme, ensuring that it meets its objectives in line with Concern Worldwide global strategic plan. He or she leads the senior management team and represents Concern Worldwide with government, donors and other international organisations.
