Background/IRC Summary:  The International Rescue Committee helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover, and gain control of their future. IRC teams provide health care, infrastructure, learning and economic support to people in 40 countries, with special programs designed for women and children. Every year, the IRC resettles thousands of refugees in 26 U.S. cities.The Global Communications team, a part of the IRC’s Policy & Practice department alongside the Technical Units and Advocacy, oversees all external and internal strategic communications, from traditional media and social media to the website and internal communications.

Job Overview/Summary: As a member of the IRC’s Global Communications team, our Refugee Resettlement Communications Director will lead the development of a United States Programs Communications strategy that positions the IRC as a refugee resettlement programmatic and thought leader and a champion for refugee resettlement in the United States.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Work with United States Program (USP) and USP Advocacy leaders to identify and prioritize key issues and opportunities to highlight the IRC’s resettlement-related program/thought leadership
  • Build and implement an annual plan, including target metrics, rooted in agreed-upon priorities and objectives which makes full use of IRC channels, including digital, media, social media, and events 
  • Manage rapid-response communications
  • Work with direct report to provide support to USP offices across the country, including media counsel, as well as management of day-to-day pro and reactive media engagement
  • Work with Communications analyst to produce quarterly reports regarding USP-specific coverage and communications results (social media, video, digital) using industry standard metrics and bench-marking; build and maintain up to date media lists and influencer databases.
  • Expand and nurture IRC’s communications network

Job Requirements:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the U.S. refugee resettlement and/ or US immigration and associated issues landscape
  • Superior judgment and the ability to anticipate and calmly, swiftly and diplomatically manage organizational response high-profile issues
  • A confident leader who is comfortable serving as a strategic Communications partner and counselor to teams of subject-matter experts
  • The ability to drive long-lead, proactive opportunities and plans while managing day-to-day issues and activities 
  • Experience dealing with sensitive issues and serving as an on-the-record spokesperson 
  • A creative thinker with a track record of developing unique angles for and approaches to securing top-tier media and successful social media results  
  • A collaborator who thrives in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
  • Superior writer who is able to produce and edit under tight-deadlines, accurate and dynamic communications materials including press-releases, op-eds and talking points
  • A team-oriented, supportive colleague
