PSI anticipates being awarded a multi-year year, $10+ million project to introduce pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV prevention in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Targeting female clients and providers, this project will take a user-centered design approach for creating a sustainable model to offer PrEP in the private sector.

PSI is seeking an experienced Project Director who will manage and oversee implementation of project activities. The Project Director should have: significant senior leadership, financial management of large multi-million dollar budgets and international development experience; a demonstrated track record in successfully managing government, donor, and sub-grantee relations; a commitment to capacity building; a strong interest in private sector approaches to development; and experience successfully implementing international health programs centered around HIV prevention. The successful candidate will have experience implementing studies, pilots or demonstration projects involving PrEP, with extensive knowledge of the relevant scientific literature on PrEP and donors. This position will be based in Washington, DC or one of the project countries and will coordinate teams in South Africa and Zimbabwe as well as manage the Operations Manager.

Your contribution

  • Serve as main point of contact/representative of the project to the donor and consortium members.
  • Develop project-wide and country specific implementation work plans including timelines and assigned roles and responsibilities for all consortium members and sub-awardees; manage the roles of all consortium members and sub-awardees including through appropriate delegation to other members of the core PSI management team.
  • Ensure the appropriate regulatory authorities are an integral part of the planning and implementation process.
  • Assist in design, implementation and oversight of research activities, working closely with research and implementing teams across the consortium.
  • Ensure all project deliverables, as stated in the contract, are achieved on time and to the highest standard.
  • Provide effective guidance and support to technical members of the in-country management teams and short–term technical consultants.
  • Supervise the Operations Manager's program management and financial management role including oversight of:
    • Donor financial reports, project budgets, monitoring of project expenditure, compliance of financial systems and controls with donor standards
    • Tracking and achievement of all project deliverables per the contract
    • Sub-contract development and negotiations with consortium members
  • Lead the design and implementation of the documentation and dissemination strategy of project research results and program learnings through workshops, working papers and the Internet.
  • Ensure high-quality periodic reporting in line with the donor and PSI requirements.

  • The candidate shall possess an advanced degree (MPH, PhD, MBA or equivalent education, or master's level degree with additional years of experience) in social sciences or business.
  • At least 10 years of experience in programmatic and financial management of large, complex donor-funded health programs.
  • Exceptional managerial and operational experience, preferably managing complex, multi-national/regional activities involving coordination with multiple program partner institutions.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with significant experience in private sector consumer and/or pharmaceutical marketing and improving market dynamics preferably in emerging economies; a command of the HIV testing and diagnostics landscape; and an understanding of PSI country platform contexts and operating realities.
