Project Manager / Senior Project Manager – Agenda 2030 and the Global Goals for Sustainable Development (Stockholm)

Contract type: Permanent full-time position (with 6 months' probation period)

Start date: June 2016; exact start date is negotiable

During the past three years, building on its long experience in sustainable development, SEI has supported the post-2015, 2030 Agenda, and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) process by providing independent research and policy support to both the UN system and individual member states.

SEI is now seeking an experienced research project manager and policy expert to coordinate SEI's engagement in support of the implementation of Agenda 2030 and the SDGs at national and international levels.

The successful candidate will manage SEI's funding portfolio and coordinate research projects and policy engagement processes focusing on various aspects of Agenda 2030 (e.g. policy coherence and integration for sustainable development, universality and globalization). This entails to design and carry out new research, provide policy support for national implementation of the goals and targets; and liaise with policy makers, international agencies and other partners (e.g. through the Independent Research Forum (IRF).

Duties and responsibilities

  • Initiate and coordinate, with other SEI researchers and with IRF partners, Agenda 2030 research projects, events, milestones, reporting and deliverables;
  • In collaboration with SEI researchers lead the preparation of relevant research and project outputs (reports, peer reviewed articles, policy briefs, presentations and biogs);
  • Participate in research and policy analysis;
  • Carry out fund raising;
  • Liaise with key partners (including governments, UN agencies, research groups and NGOs);
  • Manage budgeting, costs and reporting for the project in close collaboration with the SEI financial team;
  • Coordinate, with SEI researchers and the SEI Communications team, outreach activities of the project, including attending or hosting meetings (in Sweden, virtually and elsewhere), events and field work.

Essential Qualifications

  • Academic degree (masters or higher) in interdisciplinary environmental or social science, political science, law, economics or a related field;
  • Extensive knowledge of Agenda 2030 and the SDGs and other multilateral policy processes connected to sustainable development;
  • 5 years’ experience with policy-relevant interdisciplinary analysis, and/or research or diplomacy in an international context;
  • Experience with management and coordination of research projects;
  • A professional network relevant to Agenda 2030 and experience in liaising with international policy makers, government officials, UN agencies and research;
  • Ability to work in complex projects, including bridging multiple scientific disciplines and international teams as well as working at the intersection between science and policy;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Desirable Attributes

  • Fluency or working ability in one or more European languages (other than English);
  • Knowledge of global governance, policy coherence, policy processes;
  • Knowledge of the UN system and frameworks for follow-up and review of international agreements;
  • Experience working with policy-making and implementation, international affairs or diplomacy;
  • Experience working in one or more developing countries;
  • Track record in fund raising.
