Field coordinator (M/F) Myanmar - Kachin state

For more than 30 years, Médecins du Monde, a campaigning medical organisation committed to international solidarity, has been caring for the most vulnerable populations at home and abroad. It has continued to highlight obstacles that exist in accessing health care and has secured sustainable improvements in health-for-all policies. Those working for this independent organisation do not solely dispense care and treatment but condemn violations of human dignity and rights and fight to improve matters for populations living in precarious situations. MdM currently works in 40 countries across all continents where it focuses on 4 priority areas: caring for the health of migrants and displaced persons, promoting sexual and reproductive health, combating HIV and reducing the harm and risks associated with drug use, crises and conflicts.

MdM has been operating in Myanmar since 1994. Its main programme delivers comprehensive Harm Reduction and HIV/AIDS VHC/Hep-C prevention and care, focusing on the high risk groups of Drug Users (Kachin State), Female Sex Workers and Men having Sex with Men (Yangon area). MdM is also implementing, in partnership with the Ministry of Health, a Mother and Child Health programme in the Irrawaddy Delta. In addition, from April 2016 MdM has started a Community led Harm Reduction Project in Kachin state with in partnership with the national NGO Metta development foundation.


Under the supervision of and in close collaboration with Myanmar MdM general coordinator, as the field coordinator you undertake the following tasks:

  • To coordinate and supervise the implementation of the overall MdM activities in Kachin (currently two Harm Reduction projects);

  • To supervise and participate in the overall management of MdM Kachin team including its peer educators and by ensuring their professional development;

  • To ensure that the Kachin Support Team follows Administrative, Human Resources and Logistics procedures in their day-to-day work;

  • To ensure effective security management in Kachin and also to contribute in the development and updating of security guidelines and risk analysis;

  • To supervise, monitor, analyse and evaluate programme outcomes on a regular basis;

  • To ensure programme quality through regular technical supervision and support to Metta/MdM teams in the implementation of harm reduction related initiatives;

  • To contribute to programmes strategic plans and reviews in line with MdM policies and priorities;

  • To provide technical support and input to the overall harm reduction programmes in Myanmar;

  • To coordinate, build network and represent the organisation to relevant internal and external stakeholders, including donor agencies;

  • To monitor the overall financial and logistics management of the Kachin projects;

  • To contribute to regular internal and external reports.


Status : Employee

Contract : Fixed-term contract

Duration : 6 months


Skills required:

Successful previous experience(s) in programme management within an INGO.

Experience in Security Management in a volatile environment.Strong interest in Harm Reduction Programmes

Diplomatic skills and ability to represent MdM

Appreciated qualifications:

Previous experience in Harm Reduction Programming

Previous working experience in South East Asia region

Strong skills on M&E

Personal skills required:

Ability to work under minimum supervision.

Strong problem solving and organisational skills

Ability to classify and to manage priorities

Listening and diplomacy skills

Team spirit

Capacity to work and to live in a protracted conflict area

Proactivity/reactivity and flexibility

Languages: Fluent in English (both oral and written)
