DATES OF INTERNSHIP: Summer 2016 (Flexible)

LENGTH OF INTERNSHIP: 2-3 months, part-time

FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR THE INTERNSHIP: This is an unpaid internship.

For the duration of this internship assignment the intern will receive:

  • Access to Mercy Corps online tools
  • Workspace within Mercy Corps Headquarters office in Portland, OR
  • Any materials required for the completion of this internship

  • Intern responsibilities

Intern will remain responsible for:

  • Accommodation and living expenses
  • Transport to and from the office


The Mercy Corps Talent Management and Career Tools Intern will work directly with the Global Talent team. The intern will assist with an overall assessment of our current career tools for global field team members. The intern will be responsible for assessing what information managers need regarding careers, evaluate which tools are valuable or needed and make recommendations/develop tools to better equip our field teams across the globe. The intern will assist with a variety of talent management programming including survey facilitation, interviews, team support and analysis. In the past there has been limited information provide to global team of 4000+ on careers in the agency. We are looking for an intern to assess, survey and provide recommendations on basis tools that could provide basic guidance to team members across our 40+ country agency on their individual career journey.


  • Experience working with talent management issues in a global team
  • Assessment and evaluation skills
  • Project management skills
  • Exposure to global non-profit talent management practices
  • Understand working with field teams throughout the globe
  • Survey and data analysis experience
  • International Non Profit experience with hiring managers across 40+ countries


  • Review current career tools and documents internally
  • Assess best practices in international relief and development
  • Conduct desk research on cutting-edge practices in talent management
  • Final report and recommendations
  • Draft career tools for Talent Management and hiring managers


  • Currently enrolled BA, MS or recent graduate
  • Preferred degrees Human Resources, Business, Communications, Law
  • General interest in talent management, international/global affairs
  • Self-starter, self-managing
  • Experience: online survey systems (Survey Monkey), qualitative interviews, presenting and evaluation preferred
  • Detail oriented
  • Project/Program Management experience a plus
  • Experience with working with diverse cultures a plus
  • Second language skills a plus

LIVING CONDITIONS: This position is in Portland, OR

Mercy Corps interns and volunteers represent the agency both during and outside of work hours and are expected to conduct themselves in a professional manner and respect local laws, customs and MC's policies, procedures, and values at all times and in all in-country venues.
