Innovation Traineeship


The overall aim of the Innovation Initiative is to facilitate the use of new approaches, products, and ideas to carry out the ICRC's protection and assistance mandates in situations of armed conflict. The main objective of the Innovation Trainee position is to support the Innovation Advisor and his team in the various tasks detailed below.

Main responsibilities:

Under the responsibility of the Innovation Advisor, the trainee will be assigned the following files:

1. Innovation Community management

  • Provide briefings to regions and ICRC field staff visiting HQ on the innovation initiative
  • Maintain and develop the an internal innovation forum to facilitate exchanges and engage
  • mobile and resident staff across delegations
  • Support connections between innovators, both internally and externally
  • Manage internal communication on the Innovation Initiative's activities
  • Follow up and report on developments within field pilots

2. Communication Blog/Web Site/Social management

  • In collaboration with the existing team, manage and update on a regular basis the ICRC innovation ecosystem blog/web site (including content/article selection and review)
  • Manage and build the usage of the twitter handle

3. Coordinate and organize events

  • Coordinate planning and logistics before, during, and after events
  • Liaise with event participants
  • Manage communication and publicity for events

4. Documentation of activities and dissemination of reports and resources

  • Contribute content to reports on Initiative activities
  • Respond to internal and external requests for information and content
  • Provide support for the development of resources and training tools to support needs-driven innovation and collaboration in the field

5. Other

  • Provide office management support to ensure that all aspects of the innovation initiative's administration are implemented according to specifications and deadlines
  • Support new experimental projects as they emerge

Education and experience required:

  • BA or other first degree
  • Ability to clearly communicate thoughts and ideas both orally and in writing
  • Excellent English writing skills and ability to communicate in French
  • Proven project management capabilities and experience
  • Experience running an office or providing an administrative support function
  • Proven social media management skills
  • Concrete experience of successfully implementing a project with a wide range of stakeholders
  • Ability to enthuse individual and groups with new ideas

Profile and skills:

  • Young professional between 22 and 28 years of age
  • Demonstrated interest in the power of creativity and innovation to positively impact humanitarian organizations
  • Knowledge of the ICRC and/or Red Cross Red Crescent Movement is a distinct advantage – volunteers are especially encouraged to apply
  • Some developing country work experience in the development/ humanitarian sectors
  • A general interest in technology would be an asset, but no prior knowledge is required
  • Demonstrated innovation and change management experience in personal, educational, or professional contexts
  • Strong networking skills and an ability to support collaboration between diverse actors
  • Good organisational and project management skills
  • Familiarity with social media platforms and community management
  • Flexibility, self-reliance, and tolerance for ambiguity and change
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, and to embrace and integrate feedback


Recruited trainees will be offered a 12-month paid contract. The position is based at ICRC headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland.

Starting date: 3rd October 2016
