Enough food. A regular income. Why on earth are so many people in the world without these basics?

In the Food Security & Livelihoods team at British Red Cross we think this is unacceptable.

Like our colleagues across the global Red Cross and Red Crescent movement we refuse to ignore that hundreds of millions of people in Africa and Asia - still - live on less than $1.25 per day.

But with the right support we have seen that people can help themselves out of crises and out of poverty.

Our team works with Red Cross and Red Crescent partner societies in the world's lowest-income countries across Asia, the Middle East, Africa and the Caribbean.

As part of the world's largest humanitarian network we help tens of thousands of small farmers and households plant, harvest and sell crops, invest in and look after livestock and find other ways to earn.

Longer term funding allows us to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable populations. We work with national societies to build resilience to shocks by enabling vulnerable populations to accumulate financial and social assets.

Our vast volunteer network and auxiliary status allows us to work in areas inaccessible by many other organisations and offers us a unique role to play in national development.

It is mission-critical development and humanitarian work; providing direct emergency response and building longer term community preparedness and resilient livelihoods through market based programming and strengthened food security.

Increasingly this assistance is through cash transfers in many of the countries where we operate. We have found that in the right circumstances people prefer a payment they can then invest - in animals, shelter, seeds, tools - as they choose.

As FSL advisor with British Red Cross you will work within a multi-disciplinary team with skills in disaster risk reduction, health, WASH and cash based assistance all complementing your own, promoting innovative, integrated programming that better meets the specific needs of those assisted.

You will provide both distance and in-country technical support to national society partners helping build their capacity and understanding, identifying evidence based solutions and relevant FSL interventions.

If you are an international development adviser with food security or livelihoods experience, ready to learn or already conversant with cash programming and interested to join a committed team which is part of the world's largest independent humanitarian network, please send your curriculum vitae (four pages maximum) and a short cover letter outlining your interest and suitability to Amy Wragg at awragg@redcross.org.uk
