Grant Manager

Brussels | Stockholm

AIDS Accountability International (AAI) is an independent research and advocacy think tank organization holding leaders accountable for the commitments they have made to respond to health needs. AAI was established in 2005 with the mission to follow up on commitments to the AIDS epidemic that were made by governments. Our work has since expanded to sexual and reproductive health and rights, malaria, tuberculosis, and non-communicable diseases, as well as underlying causes such as inequality and discrimination. We work on holding all leaders accountable, such as business, civil society, funding partners and bi and multi-lateral development organizations.


Today we are just under 10 employees located in offices in South Africa, Brussels and Stockholm, with its seat in Sweden. In 2017 AAI is starting a five-year Build-programme supported by the Ford Foundation and will expand our staff resources in different areas. One of them is Resource Mobilization.


AAI is therefore seeking a Grants Manager, ideally starting 1 April 2017, to support our Resource Mobilization work. The position will be 50% to full-time and reports directly to Executive Chair. We are open to either an employment or a consultant arrangement. The candidate can work remotely but must be able to travel for meetings to Brussels and Stockholm. It is an advantage if you already are based in Stockholm or Brussels. You must be able to work in Sweden or Belgium.


Purpose of the role/description:

Proposal/Grant manager and progress reporting:


·       Project proposals and concept notes developed independently or jointly with Senior Staff or Chairman of the Board

·       Project progress reports developed/reviewed jointly with Senior Staff/Chair

·       Written work completed to highest standards delivered under tight deadlines

·       Internal report submissions coordinated and tasks managed simultaneously

·       Full compliance with requirements and conditions in grant agreements and contracts, in close cooperation with concerned colleagues, is ensured

·       Any other proposals written by other staff are edited and reviewed


Stakeholder Liaison and networking. Support Senior Manager, Relation Building & Resource Development to:


·       Cultivate long-term funding partner relationships to ensure continued funding and involvement with AAI

·       Cultivate new funding partner portfolio

·       Develop strategic partnerships and market AAI as a strategic leader/partner

·       Undertake joint proposals with other agencies (eg. joint projects, research initiatives and learning), after senior management approval



The following skills and qualifications will be essential:

·       At least five years of proven and relevant experience in fundraising for development

·       Opportunity-thinking very desirable

·       Excellent demonstrated English language communication skills, both written and oral

(native speaking proficiency) are essential for this position. Versatility in writing ability is a strong advantage, including ability to write both technical, programmatic and fundraising-oriented communications

·       Excellent proposal and report writing skills are essential

·       Understanding and knowledge of various reporting and proposal formats and requirements of a wide range of funding partners are essential

·       Good knowledge and competency with results-based monitoring and evaluation program design, including log frames and performance frameworks are essential

·       Familiarity with the philanthropic sector at international level is essential

·       Spoken and written French and/or Spanish languages an advantage

·       Knowledge of HIV/AIDS, sexual and reproductive health and right and related global health challenges and underlying causes such as inequality is desirable

·       Facilitation skills are desirable

·       Developed presentation skills are desirable


Education and Experience:


·       Degree in International Development, Public Health or other social science related field or equivalent background acquired

·       Project management experience, with at least 5 years proposal development with main funding partner agencies and international aid agencies is essential

·       Demonstrated people and team skills is essential

·       User skills in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint is essential

·       Strong interpersonal skills: ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and stakeholders from a range of disciplines and cultures is essential

·       Used to work in an organisation with diverse funding streams and demonstrable track record of relationship building with multiple stakeholders

·       Thinking, writing, self-managing and relational capabilities

·       Previous work on human rights, health issues, social justice, sexual and reproductive health and rights will be an advantage


This position involves up to 15% travel.
