1.         Organizational context

 

The post is located in the WIPO Japan Office (WJO) in Tokyo.  The WJO serves an important role in promoting WIPO’s services and in undertaking capacity building activities in the area of intellectual property (IP) in cooperation with the government of the host country, Japan.  The WJO creates unique resources in English for IP awareness and training, for example, the IP Advantage database (www.wipo.int/ipadvantage/en/), with a view to promoting the role and value of IP and assisting innovative business persons in developing countries to enhance their skills in using the IP system.  The incumbent will participate in the preparation, drafting and editing of new stories based on publicly-available episodes and news and will create corresponding new entries in the IP Advantage database.  The incumbent will use the entries as case studies for practical training of IP management and provide primary research-related support and work in relation to IP Advantage.  The incumbent works under the supervision of the Director of the WJO.

 

 

2.         Duties and responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

 

1. In connection with the IP-Advantage database\:

 

(a) Research, update, classify and edit short case studies in English on the successful use of IP worldwide.

 

(b) Draft new case studies in English based on secondary sources and primary information to be obtained through e-mail/phone interviews.

 

(c) Identify images to illustrate case studies and obtain permission for their use.

 

(d) Upload case study texts, pictures and metadata into the web content management system and database.

 

(e) Participate in meetings to prepare a plan for IP Advantage Database content creation, and assist the Director in making necessary arrangements in coordination with the WIPO News and Media Section for the creation of audio-visual material for public dissemination and visualization of case studies selected from IP Advantage Database content.

 

(f) Assist the Director in managing local or international individual contractors hired to create training materials in English and teaching notes in English of case studies selected from the IP Advantage Database by reviewing their contributions and bringing any issue to the Director’s attention.

 

(g) Assist the Director in coordinating organizational and logistical preparations for international workshops by following up on administrative arrangements, monitoring the progress of documents and other materials required for workshops, and drafting identified sections of workshop agendas or programs.

 

2. Assist the Director in organizing regional workshops, training courses or knowledge-sharing events in Japan for officials of Intellectual Property Offices, entrepreneurs or business person in developing countries by liaising with participants to ensure the coordination of particular services for administrative support, and document preparation and distribution.

 

3.  Monitor accounts and expenses, and prepare status reports and records of petty cash.

 

4. Assist in developing and updating WJO web pages in English and Japanese.

 

5. Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

3.         Requirements

 

Education

 

Essential

First-level university degree.

 

Experience

 

Essential

At least one year of relevant professional work experience.

 

Desirable

Experience in editing educational materials in English.

 

Professional experience in covering short articles for journals in English.

 

Languages

 

            Essential

Excellent knowledge of English, including excellent writing skills, and working level of Japanese.

 

Job-related competencies

 

            Essential

Project coordination and implementation skills.

 

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

5.         Information

 

Mobility\:  Candidates appointed to an international position with WIPO are subject to mobility and may be assigned to any activity or duty station of the Organization throughout the world.

 

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances.  The figures quoted below are based on the February 2017 rate of 80.7%

Additional Information

 

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
