Under the general guidance of the Partnership Manager, the incumbent will be facilitate securing, managing, developing, coordinating, negotiating and monitoring partnerships with foundations and other institutions, such as NGOs, with a primary focus on existing private foundation partners. Responsibilities will also include supporting development and implementation of a strategic framework for engaging with foundations, strengthening internal coordination and information sharing, and overseeing the grants management functions of the team.

Purpose of the Position

Under the general guidance of the Partnership Manager, the incumbent will be facilitate securing, managing, developing, coordinating, negotiating and monitoring partnerships with foundations and other institutions, such as NGOs, with a primary focus on existing private foundation partners. Responsibilities will also include supporting development and implementation of a strategic framework for engaging with foundations, strengthening internal coordination and information sharing, and overseeing the grants management functions of the team.

Key Accountabilities and Duties & Tasks

  • Existing partnerships : Strengthen, deepen and maintain existing foundation partnerships, including developing and executing partner-specific engagement plans, establishing and maintaining information flows, reviewing and assessing existing partnerships, and renewing partnerships and collaborations.
  • Grants management : Oversee the grants management functions of the team, including proposal development, agreements, funds management, monitoring programme implementation, and reporting
  • Strategic framework for foundations and internal coordination and information flows : Support the Global Philanthropy team's efforts to develop, implement and monitor strategy plan for engaging with foundations. Further, support efforts to ensure that vertical and horizontal coordination and information flows around specific foundation interactions are established and followed up; the former focuses on the Office of the Executive Director and UNICEF senior leadership, the latter on colleagues within HQ Divisions, regional/country offices and National Committees.
  • New partnerships and capacity building :  Support efforts to identify and prioritize prospective partners, obtain buy-in within UNICEF family (HQ, regional/country offices and National Committees) on partnership-specific and foundation community-wide approaches, and increase number and quality of partnerships. Further, work with National Committees, HQ and regional/country office colleagues to increase knowledge of foundation community and how to increase skills for engaging with foundations. Provide guidance in developing, negotiating and implementing partnerships with the foundation community in line with UNICEF policies and guidelines.
  • General foundation/NGO support and institutional priorities :  Facilitate interactions with private sector partners, respond to UNICEF and National Committee queries on private sector issues, and facilitate grant making from 'Other NGOs'. Further, remain informed of key institutional priorities in order to position the Global Philanthropy team to proactively engage with existing and potential partners around such priorities.
  • Business analysis : Undertake and support financial analyses of foundation income, including projections and actuals, inform market-specific financial analyses and opportunities, and provide inputs on pertinent trends and influences on the foundation sector.

Impact of Results

Effective implementation of the above tasks will help to contribute toward the Global Philanthropy team's stewarding of the global foundations strategy; it will help to drive the organization toward meeting expected annual financial goals from the foundation sector by the end of the next strategy period in 2021; and it will help achieve long-term thought leadership partnerships with the foundations community which will help realize children's rights.

Qualifications of Successful Candidate

  • Advanced university degree in international development, public administration, business management, communication, or a related field. 

       *A first level university degree in combination with qualifying experience in partnership development may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.

  • Five years progressively responsible professional work experience in a combination of the following: private foundations and/or other public or private grant-making bodies or organizations, partnership development, programming, communications, and project management.
  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in direct relationship cultivation and management of high value partnerships.

  • Familiarity with UNICEF programmes is highly desirable.

  • Fluency in English required. Knowledge of another official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian or Spanish) is an asset.
