Introduction

The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental and non-profit organization, founded in 1956, that works in 40 countries around the world.

DRC’s mandate is driven by three global strategic objectives within the DRC Assistance Framework: Saving lives and alleviation of immediate suffering among people affected by conflict; Safeguarding, restoration and development of livelihoods; and, Institutional and organizational change that contributes to protection of people’s rights and peaceful handling of conflict.

 

Background

The closure of borders in early March 2016 has triggered a build-up of refugee and migrant population on mainland Greece. The displaced population is currently accommodated in 34 sites across the mainland, which will keep receiving additional influx from the Greek islands and spontaneous camps over the next weeks. The sites where DRC is engaged are under the management and responsibility of the Ministry of Migration Policy (MoMP) or the Ministry of Defense (MoD).

With the overall objective of urgently improving the quality of the protection environment and conditions for persons likely in need of international protection, DRC projects seek to support primary duty-bearers (Ministry of Migration Policy as the primary actor) to the furthest extent possible through the implementation of protection, site management services, shelter, WASH and other activities in sites where DRC is engaged across the mainland.

 

 
 
 

Purpose

Under supervision of the Protection Manager Northern Greece and in close coordination with other DRC field units, the CWC Officer will support the implementation of all Protection objectives under DRC projects in the sites where DRC is engaged.

Furthermore the CWC Officer will develop and maintain good relations with the persons of concern, relevant stakeholders and other humanitarian actors, to support adequate implementation and coordination of DRC’s Protection activities.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities will include, but not necessarily be limited, to the following:

 

  • Identify CwC opportunities and gaps
  • Creation and production of information campaigns, including, but not limited in collaboration with the legal and the protection officers for info and awareness raising sessions, aiming at increasing knowledge among refugee communities on their rights and obligations
  • Mapping of activities (including, but not limited, to self-initiated volunteer groups activities in the fields of protection, education, child and youth recreational activities, community watch groups) provided in the sites aiming to improve visibility among refugees of the services provided
  • Improvement of sharing / dissemination of information in the form of two ways communication with refugees, asylum seekers, migrants, host communities and volunteers
  • Facilitation of a smooth production and distribution of communication tools (including, but not limited, to leaflets, signs etc) for the affected population
  • Collaboration with Protection and SMS teams and community mobilizers
  • Working with community leaders and thematic groups
  • Planning, organizing, participating and conducting FGD for issues raised by Protection in the implementation of activities organized in the sites
  • Reporting and analysis of CwC activities to the Protection Manager Northern Greece on weekly and monthly basis
  • Attend the CwC regional working group and any other CwC meeting in and off the site.
  • Supporting already existing CwC initiatives
  • Any other duties as may be assigned by the Protection Manager Northern Greece, relevant to the achievement of protection

 

Professional Qualifications

  • University degree in a relevant field
  • At least three years working experience in a related field; previous working experience with local or international NGOs will be considered as a strong advantage
  • Experience of community-based or community mobilisation work in a humanitarian context is a strong advantage
  • Excellent verbal and written English and Greek skills
  • Working knowledge of Arabic or Farsi is an added advantage
  • Strong computer skills
  • High professional ethics

General Regulations

 

The employee shall follow DRC instructions on safety, confidentiality and ethical guidelines, including the Code of Conduct and the Humanitarian Accountability Framework.

Employee should not engage in any other paid activity during the DRC contract period without prior authorization.

Employee should not engage in any activity that could harm DRC or the implementation of any project during the DRC contract period.

Employee should not give interviews to the media or publish project-related photos or other material without prior authorization.

Employee shall return all borrowed equipment for the project to DRC after the end of the contract period or upon request.

 

Terms and Conditions 

The contract will be under the Greek Labor Law, and all allowances will be provided to the employees (Christmas, Easter, Vacation bonus). 
 
All work related transport costs from duty station to other work sites are refundable. 
 
All communication costs work related are refundable.

The position is a re-advertisement and will be based in Thessaloniki (Greece) with roving possibilities among the sites of Northern Greece.  National terms and conditions apply.
