Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has been present in Somalia since early 2004 and has since expanded its Horn of Africa Programme to Kenya in 2006 and to Ethiopia in 2011. Since 2004, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has demonstrated a regional competence and expertise in working with displaced populations.

The Regional Office is based in Nairobi, Kenya with offices and operations in Somalia (Puntland, Somaliland and Mogadishu), Kenya (Dadaab and Kakuma ), Ethiopia (Addis Ababa, Dolo Ado, Shire,Gambella and Asosa), South Sudan (Juba, Awil, Alek and Aweril) and Yemen (Sa’naa and Aden).

The NRC Horn of Africa & Yemen mission is an expanding programme. NRC started its operations in Kenya in the refugee camps in Dadaab in February 2007. NRC has WASH, Shelter, Education, Food Security and Livelihood and Information Counselling and Legal Assistant programmes implemented in the refugee camps in Dadaab.
NRC is seeking to recruit Education Project Assistant. The Project Assistant is responsible in the implementation of the Education Project in Dadaab operation.

The Education Project Assistant report to the Project Officer - Dadaab.

Job description

  • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
  • Assist with the implementation of the support function portfolio according to plan of action
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
  • Ensure proper filing of documents
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement of the support function
  • Monitor and report on the project activities and ensure compliance with plans and NRC standards
  • Work with the community education committees in the planning and enrolment of the activities
  • Distribute and monitor the use of school materials according to procedures
  • Administrate teachers’ and school children’s payments and entitlements and assist teachers where necessary
  • Suggest new methods and approaches in order to improve the quality of the activities
  • Report all protection related concerns
  • Carry out data collection as required
  • Prepare field reports – Weekly, monthly and quarterly
  • Prepare and file relevant documents as required by line manager

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Education certificate from recognized and accredited institution
  • Two years’ experience in Education project and with evidence of successfully implementation of similar projects
  • Have at least five years of teaching experience in Primary School, pre-primary or any other formal or non-formal learning institution
  • Experience in supervising, training, and coaching education team staffs
  • Emergency Education experience will be highly desirable
  • Experience in community development initiatives
  • High level of personal integrity and sensitivity to adult psychology.
  • High standard of English methodology including oral skills.
  • Knowledge on use participatory and learner centred methods, children rights and the global education standards.
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities

Personal qualities

  • Strong analytical, administration and documentation skills in the management of educational institutions or programs consisting of Youth and primary education.
  • Experience in proposal and report writing and excellent computer skills.
  • Special interest, understanding, sensitivity and proven skills in working with the disadvantaged Youth, children and especially girls.
  • Proven commitment and passion in inspiring disadvantaged children to achieve their full potential in education and ability to inspire others with the commitment
  • Good communication skills and Knowledge of the local language (Somali) – if different than English
  • Project implementation supervisory skills
  • Proficiency in Report Writing
  • Ability to resolve individual and group conflicts
  • Ability to work with minimum supervision and deliver on deadlines
