Intern Land Tenure Assessment in the SPIRAL-Project in Kenema, Sierra Leone

The position is to be filled in April/May with a contract duration of two to three months. The SPIRAL-Project, implemented by Deutsche Welthungerhilfe and a private-sector partner, de-velops and tests a fair, transparent and inclusive business model for responsible land-based investments in the Sierra Leonean Cocoa Sector. The Project endeavours to promote innova-tion in the Sierra Leonean cocoa sector, drive economic development and - at the same time - strengthen land governance. In line with these objectives the Project intends to under-take a Land Tenure Assessment (or Land Mapping) in selected Project Intervention Areas which will help stakeholders understand existing land tenure conditions and document the legitimate tenure rights of community members and other land right holders.

Aims and objectives of the internship

As intern, you will support the Project-team in designing, preparing, undertaking, and docu-menting the planned Land Tenure Assessment and contribute to the establishment of a pub-lic GIS-database which documents the collected tenure-information and provides improved tenure security and a reduced risk of exclusion and loss of land rights to the wider communi-ty. You will work closely with the Project’s M&E Officer and report directly to the Head of Project.

Your most important responsibilities:

• Conduct research on the design of a Land Tenure Assessment; develop methodologi-cal approach
• Organise a “Land Mapping Planning Workshop” to define data requirements
• Liaise with the LEGEND Partner Cadasta Foundation in order to align with best-practice standards
• Initialize and prepare the Project’s digital data collection and mapping system
• Oversee the Land Tenure Assessment
• Upload the collected information into the Project’s GIS-Database
• Analyse the collected information; visualise in maps and document in a Land-Mapping Report

As a qualified applicant you:

• should hold a Bachelor’s Degree (OR be in the final year of studies; OR presently pur-sue a Master’s Course) in land governance/management/administration, geography, international development, environmental studies or any other related field
• should have full working proficiency in English
• should have skills in GIS (e.g. ArcGIS 10.3), databank management and participatory research methods
