1.  Organizational context

 

The post is located in the Goods and Services Database Section that is responsible for the operational support and evolution of a web based tool supporting goods and services classification, including the Madrid Goods and Services (MGS) Database, a single classification database catering to the needs of both internal stakeholders (Madrid Registry Operations Division examiners) and external stakeholders (trademark applicants and National Offices).

 

The main role of the incumbent is to assume the responsibility of the International Bureau (IB) in matters of trademark classification in managing the classification content of the MGS Database. The incumbent works under the supervision of the Goods and Services Database Section Head.

 

2.  Duties and responsibilities

 

The incumbent performs the following tasks\:

 

(a)  Manage the classification content of the Goods and Services Database  to make it as useful as possible to both internal and external stakeholders, taking responsibility for quality control of the classification data and for yearly updates required to align the Database with each new version or edition of the Nice Classification;

(b)  Cooperate with National Offices with a view to enhancing harmonization of trademark classification among Madrid Member States;

(c)  Provide classification advice and training to external stakeholders (trademark applicants and National Offices);

(d)  Provide classification advice and training to the Madrid Registry Operations Division to ensure harmonized classification practice;

(e)  Draft proposals on behalf of the IB for updating the Nice Classification;

(f)  Follow the yearly Committee of Experts of the Nice Classification and implement related changes in the Goods and Services Database;

(g)  Participate in internal and external activities on the maintenance and development of classification databases and tools;

(h)  Streamline technical integration of classification data into the Goods and Services Database;

(i)  Liaise with IT experts for enhancing functional specifications of MGS and for testing the implementation of new versions;

(j)  Perform any other related duties, as required.

 

3.  Requirements

 

Education

 

Essential\:

First-level university degree.

 

Experience

 

Essential\:

At least three years of experience in Nice classification examination and in the use of Trademark classification systems.

 
Skills
Understanding of the Madrid Agreement/Protocol, Common Regulations and Administrative Instructions, and the NICE Agreement.
 
Excellent knowledge of the International Classification of Goods and Services for the Purposes of the Registration of Marks (Nice Classification).
 
Comprehensive knowledge of the procedures relating to the Madrid System for the International Registration of Marks, in particular the application of the Nice Classification.
 
Ability to manage terminology in a variety of technical and specialized areas.
 
Excellent ability to work independently and take initiatives within pre-defined objectives.
 
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
