Coordinator for the 2018 Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress (BARC)

 

Duty Station: Beijing, China                                                

Duration: Fixed Term – 15 months, with 2 month probation period

Remuneration: RMB 25,000/month

Reporting: Reports directly to INBAR Deputy Director General

 

Position Introduction

The International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR) is the only treaty-based inter-governmental organisation committed to reducing poverty and protecting the environment through the sustainable use of bamboo and rattan.  With Headquarters in Beijing, China and regional offices in India, Ethiopia, Ghana and Ecuador, the INBAR Secretariat supports its 42 members world-wide and has links with a large number of international, regional and national organisations.

After 20 years of development, INBAR has grown rapidly. By hosting the first Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress (BARC 2018), we seek to provide a platform for South-South and South-South cooperation on sustainable development. We also strive to further reinforce bamboo and rattan’s role in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially climate change mitigation and adaptation.

INBAR will invite approximately 1200-1500 participants from the government, civil society, business, academia, and media sectors. They will be selected according to their particular affiliation, skills, background or interests in bamboo and rattan.

The 2018 Global Bamboo and Rattan Congress (BARC 2018) will be held in later April or early May of 2018. The Congress will involve the following activities:

  • Global Ministerial Summit
  • Research and Innovation Exchange
  • Bamboo and Rattan Business Forum
  • Trade Fair and Exhibition
  • Field Visits to Forests and Producers

INBAR is currently seeking an experienced and highly capable Coordinator, who is responsible for planning and management of the Congress. The Coordinator manages a small team in Beijing. Fundraising to generate additional resources is part of the job.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the INBAR team on the overall preparation of BARC 2018;
  • Manages the overall BARC 2018 preparation work and implementation;
  • Leads fundraising for BARC 2018;
  • Promotes BARC 2018 through outreach activities.
  • Coordinates the preparation of INBAR 20th anniversary activities in year 2017, and other responsibilities may be assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements:

  • Advanced Degree in Forestry, Natural Resources or a related field;
  • Understanding and knowledge about bamboo and rattan will be an advantage;
  • At least 5 years of experience working in project coordination, big events planning, overall preparation, management and organisation;
  • Strategic planning experience;
  • Fluent spoken English is mandatory for this position. Chinese native speaker will be preferred. Working knowledge of other INBAR official languages – French and Spanish – would be an advantage;
  • Willing to work in a small office with cross-cultural international staff, and therefore flexible in work planning and execution
  • Experience in proposal writing, fundraising and donor relations is essential;
  • Experience in Communication and Marketing
  • Good humoured and a team player;
  • Someone who is excited about the potential of bamboo and rattan in sustainable development.
