The Digital Strategy Section (DSS) within the Division of Communication comprises Web, Social Media and Multimedia teams working together to create compelling public-facing content and to provide digital services within the organization. Through multiple platforms and in multiple languages, DSS draws attention to the many facets of UNICEF’s work, encouraging public support, participation and action, as well as ensuring greater transparency and accountability.DSS seeks to hire a Social Media Content Strategist consultant responsible for creating compelling social media content, with a strong focus on video optimization and analytics. The consultant will be responsible for the video optimization process between the Social Media and Multimedia teams as DSS strives to make videos as engaging and sharable as possible. The Social Media Content Strategist will sit within the Digital Strategy Section's Social Media and Engagement Team under the supervision of the Head of Social Media with oversight from the Digital Communication Specialist – but also work closely with the Multimedia team. She/he will lead on our social video distribution strategy and the day to day management of our Facebook video output and our presence on YouTube, regularly analyzing and reporting on performance and optimizing our strategy as appropriate. She/he will also support the team on social media content strategy and campaign coordination and be expected to regularly step up and drive projects.

Rationale and context of the assignment:

Responsibilities:

  • Social media content creation and strategy with a strong focus on video
  • Coordinate the social video production process between the Social Media and Engagement and Multimedia teams
  • Map out and execute an effective workflow for social video content optimization, refining as needed
  • Work closely with Multimedia team Producers and Editors to shape compelling and engaging social video content which furthers UNICEF's mission
  • Lead on the day to day management and continual optimization of our YouTube channel and Facebook videos
  • Establish a social video channel distribution strategy
  • Be a major contributor to UNICEF's Snapchat account and to our Instagram Stories and Facebook Live output – shaping and implementing our smartphone social video strategy  
  • With relevant stakeholders map out a social video content and channels strategy, including our 'hero, hub, hygiene' approach
  • Craft snappy and enticing social video copy – edit colleagues' writing to this end
  • Create compelling non video social media content for digital platforms and support the growth and engagement of UNICEF's digital community
  • Regularly report on and analyze social video content performance, suggesting improvements
  • Actively participate in editorial meetings, helping guide social video digital editorial processes and strategy    
  • Work closely with the team's marketing lead on the effective marketing and seeding of video content.  
  • Coordinate social media projects and campaigns as required, working closely with relevant communications colleagues, other teams, and offices worldwide to develop joint digital initiatives
  • Monitor and moderate social media channels, flagging risk and opportunities to deepen engagement.
  • Identify new digital tools, trends and best practices. Keep track of efforts and activities of competitors, sharing learnings    
  • Support other teams in HQ and offices worldwide on their day to day social video efforts and develop guidance documents and lead trainings when required
  • Participate in and represent DSS at relevant conferences and events    
  • Upload social materials as needed to internal content sharing platform WeShare

Duty Station: On-site, UNICEF offices, NYHQ

Travel: Travel will take place under UNICEF guidelines

Supervisor and timeframes for reviewing milestones and performance: Head of Social Media and Engagement, Social Media and Engagement Team, with support from Digital Communications Specialist, Digital Strategy, DOC. Reviews conducted every 6 months and at the end of contract.

 Performance indicators for evaluation of results:

  • Standard UNICEF Performance Evaluations conducted every 6 months and at end of contract.
  • Timely completion of tasks set by management.

 Qualifications or specialized knowledge/ experience required:

  • 4+ years experience working on social media content, ideally with plenty of video experience
  • Experience of optimizing YouTube channels and Facebook video content
  • Experience in developing and implementing social video and wider digital strategies
  • Proven ability to write flawless, tight social copy on constant deadlines
  • Strong social copy editing skills  
  • Adept at relationship management
  • Extensive experience in process and workflows. Project management experience/qualification a major plus
  • Familiar with social media platforms including Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Pinterest, Google+. Experience of using Hootsuite
  • Experience in reporting on quantitative and qualitative social analytics – ideally video
  • Proven news sense and understanding of what motivates younger audiences – and editorial judgement
  • Strong ability to manage multiple priorities within specified timeframes
  • Awareness of social media communication behaviours in developing regions/countries
  • Experience of working with agencies highly desirable  
  • Understanding of digital marketing and fundraising strategies a plus
  • Experience of capacity building and training a plus
  • Experience in working for the UN, UNICEF or with International NGOs or global organizations is a plus but by no means essential
  • Must have excellent command of English (native speaker preferred). Working knowledge of French, Spanish and/or Arabic a plus
  • Relevant Bachelor Degree required. Masters preferred but not essential

Payment Terms: Monthly submission of invoices paid in USD.

UNICEF recourse in case of unsatisfactory performance: Payment will only be made for work satisfactorily completed and accepted by UNICEF.
