Business Support Officer – (National Contract)

DRC is currently implementing a project on livelihood possibilities for refugees within the Turkey context. This project is focused on enhancing social self-reliance through counseling and provision of transferrable skills, and economic-self-reliance through the provision of vocational skills training and job placements. The project is also supporting livelihood opportunities through the provision of home-based and small business grants. 
 
Who are we? 
 
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental and non-profit organization, founded in 1956, that works in more than 35 countries around the world. DRC has been operating in Turkey since early 2013, working with by and large with non-camp Syrian refugees and affected host communities. DRC is committed to basic humanitarian principles; including impartiality and neutrality, and offers the highest standards of accountability to the people it serves. The overall objective for DRC in Turkey is the protection and promotion of durable solutions to displacement affected populations on the basis of humanitarian principles and human rights with more immediate objectives focusing both on the immediate subsistence needs, protection and self-reliance support as well as a more long term focus on capacity building. In Turkey, DRC works partially through partners, also providing intensive capacity building support, while also conducting direct implementation. 
 
About the Job: 
 
DRC is looking for a Business Support Officer for its program in Turkey. In close cooperation with the Business Incubator Manager and the Livelihood Coordinator. Business Support Officer is responsible for; 
 
Capacity Building:
 
  • Providing intensive advice, guidance, counselling and mentoring to potential entrepreneurs wishing to start their own SMEs and advising them in micro and small business management practices, methods and techniques as well as providing tailored coaching and consulting based on the unique needs of each entrepreneur. 
  • Assisting SMEs and providing direct technical assistance to SMEs in the research and development of business plans and cash flow forecasts as well as assisting and supporting applications for available funding sources outside of the incubator. 
  • Making presentations and delivering training sessions in the business incubator to hosted SMEs and assessing the current situation of existing SMEs, challenges and issues that they face and designing accurate and relevant training sessions accordingly.  
  • Selecting SMEs for each training based on specific needs and business sector, along with DRC team and consultants in the business incubator. 
  • Developing short and medium-term growth strategies for SMEs based on specific sectoral dynamics and potentials as well as local economic context.  
  • Supporting and providing inputs on business development in coordination with other staff in the incubator and the business incubator manager. Proposing ideas to incubator team for review and proactively identify opportunities based on needs assessment and gap analysis for the SMEs. 
 
Technical Assistance:
  • Assessing the technical and economic feasibility of business plans of SMEs and developing appropriate tools for this assessment.  
  • Providing advice and assistance in the (1) establishment and maintenance of business and financial records of hosted SMEs and (2) their recordkeeping systems, in compliance with all relevant business, accounting, and taxation laws, regulations, guidelines, and standards. 
 
Coordination and Representation:
 
  • Communicating with, negotiating with and developing partnerships with a large variety of strategic private and public players in these (potential) growth sectors to introduce SMEs in the incubator. 
  • Promoting the business incubator by developing networks with outside agencies whilst, at all times, acting in the best interests of the business incubator. 
  • Participating in the development, promotion, coordination, and delivery of small business management training programs and workshops together with the project partners. 
  • Together with the business incubator manager, coordinating and/or participating in efforts to build relationships with area businesses such as Chamber of Commerce, other business development centers or the universities to establish and develop contract training opportunities. 
  • Participating, as assigned, as a member of DRC Business Incubator to promote local business and economic development within Hatay region and Southeast Turkey in general. 
 
Monitoring & Evaluation & Reporting:
 
  • Monitoring and evaluating operational activities and effectiveness of the current activities of the hosted SMEs and preparing reports as appropriate. 
  • Evaluate SMEs’ knowledge of the subject training courses to be conducted prior to the start of the trainings (pre-test), evaluate progress (during training) and evaluate beneficiaries’ knowledge after the conclusion of the training (post-test) and measure impact improvement achieved. 
Research & Analysis:
 
  • Performing economic analyses of key sectors of the local economy, in a qualitative and quantitative manner, and develop a 'deep' understanding of their functioning.  
  • Identifying potential for growth of SMEs, constraints to growth and innovative solutions and opportunities to unlock this growth potential, making enterprises more competitive and creating job and income earning opportunities for whole local community.  
  • Together with the legal consultant, analyzing the consequences of new regulations related to “launching a small business” for Syrians and follow up the implementation of those regulations in the assigned location, in order to design adequate programming. 
About you: 
 
To be successful in this role, you must have the following qualifications: 
  • University degree or higher education relevant to business administration/management or economics  
  • At least 5 years of proven experience in the private sector in business development and/or consultancy. 
  • Demonstrated experience in teaching or training  
  • Excellent analysis and report writing skills;  
  • Strong organisation and teamwork skills;  
  • Ability to communicate, negotiate and develop good working relations with a wide variety of players in the private and public sectors 
  • Fluency in the Turkish and English language, both written and verbal and Arabic is an asset.  
  • Above average computer literacy. 
  • Experience in working with business development programs, knowledge in political economy and economic market analysis is an asset 
  • Experience in working in a business incubator is a strong asset 
  • Familiarity with the issues affecting the private sector in Southeast Turkey as well as national trends in business and the economy

We offer: 
 
DRC Turkey offers an employment contract of 9 months with the possibility of extension (depending on funding). The position will be based in Antakya with regular travel to other DRC Turkey offices in the country as directed. We offer a fair compensation package depending on your qualification and experiences as well as additional allowances such as relocation allowance and living allowances, if applicable. DRC Turkey is income tax exempted. Furthermore, DRC Turkey provides training opportunities to develop and strengthen the quality of its services as well as its staff members’ professional and personal development.
