Synthesis Report - Determinants of Adolescent Wellbeing in Low and Middle Income countries

Purpose of the Position

The objective of the consultancy is to produce a quality synthesis report for the Adolescent Well-being Research Programme.  The programme is in its third year, and starting to yield research results and conclusions. This synthesis publication aims to draw together research findings and threads from across the programme into a cohesive contribution. The summary should show what we know and have found out about structural determinants and what works to improve adolescent wellbeing in low and middle income countries.  The audience includes programme stakeholders, including scholars, UNICEF and other practitioners, donors, policy makers.

Key Accountabilities and Duties & Tasks 

Overall: To advance a structural determinants approach to child and adolescent wellbeing. Specifically:

  • To enhance the conceptualization and applicability of a structural determinants approach for understanding wellbeing and its distribution among adolescent girls and boys in different low and middle income contexts;
  • To deploy or operationalize the approach in different settings, going beyond the identification of constraints and barriers to more closely examine the underlying drivers of wellbeing;
  • To improve the quality of data and methodologies for analysing adolescent wellbeing, including gender relevant and specific measures;
  • To identify areas of effective policy interventions to improve adolescent wellbeing and explore viable options for transforming gender relations during adolescence ;
  • To explore new ground on work in adolescents while also contributing to building a systematic evidence base in partnership with national and global networks of scholars and practitioners.  
  •  To review and identify gaps; to participate and oftentimes facilitate meetings (including phone conferences) involving the Consultant, Researchers, Programme Manager and relevant staff from the Office of Research, to draw up a the report storyline and plan.
  • To draft the main text of the Adolescent Wellbeing report in English approx.25,000 words/ 50 pages;
  • To revise the text and reflect comments received from the working group and other identified reviewers, in line with Innocenti Quality Assurance Procedures;
  • To copy edit all text, boxes, text figures including acknowledgements, sources and notes in a consistent Innocenti publication style (English);
  • To develop input for support materials for promoting and disseminating the publication such as overall summary, evidence blog, newsletter story, and short thematic notes.

Qualifications of Successful Candidate 

  • High quality analytical and writing skills (in English) with experience of communicating research for the purpose of wider advocacy on behalf of children.
  • Familiarity with the thematic issues, policy debates and technical content addressed in the Innocenti Structural Determinants of Adolescent wellbeing in low and middle incomes countries programme
  • Prior experience and successful record in producing high profile publications
  • Excellent communication skills to facilitate inputs across a number of research projects
  • Advanced academic qualifications in relevant field, at Master or PhD level

Desirable:

  • Prior experience producing technical reports for UN agencies
  • Peer-reviewed publication record in adolescent well-being or related subject
  • Experience and knowledge of UNICEF social protection, family support, child protection, education, gender work in programming Sub-Saharan Africa and other countries relevant to the programme.

Additional Information

  • Duration of the consultancy: The Consultant will work at his/her home base, in regular electronic and telephone consultations with the Supervisor, Programme Manager and relevant Office of Research staff, concerned with the project. Periodic updates will be provided, as needed, including in writing. Periodic consultations will be held in Florence or other locations to be mutually agreed. 

The expected number of working days within the overall period of the consultancy is 75 days. These working days should be completed during the period of 1 April to 31 October (approx. 7 months) including two trips to Florence, Italy for workshops.

Applicants are asked to submit their daily fee in USD in their application. Applications without daily fee will not be considered.
