NRC advocates for the rights of displaced populations and offers assistance within the shelter, education, emergency food security, legal assistance, and water,sanitation and hygiene sectors.

The Norwegian Refugee Council has approximately 4000 committed and competent employees involved in projects across four continents. In addition, NRC runs one of the world’s largest standby rosters -NORCAP, with 650 professionals, ready to be deployed on 72 hours notice when a crisis occurs

Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has been present in Somalia since early 2004 and has since expanded its Horn of Africa Programme to Kenya in 2006 and to Ethiopia in 2011. Since 2004, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) has demonstrated a regional competence and expertise in working with displaced populations.

The NRC Horn of Africa & Yemen mission is an expanding programme. NRC started its operations in Kenya in the refugee camps in Dadaab in February 2007. NRC has WASH, Shelter, Education, Food Security and Livelihood and Information Counseling and Legal Assistant programmes implemented in the refugee camps in Dadaab, Mandera and Kakuma.

The Literacy and Numeracy Teacher will take the lead in implementation of the NRCs alternative education programmes and conduct on-the-job teacher training and mentoring of inexperienced and incentive teachers.

Literacy and Numeracy Teacher will report to the Project Officer- Education.

Job description

  • To prepare comprehensive work plans that will enable you deliver learning activities as per the curriculum.
  • To deliver content using learner friendly methods as per the syllabus in your field of specialization.
  • To monitor the implementation of the training syllabus and ensure all modules are complete within the set period.
  • To cooperate and support the entire team of other teachers in the programme.
  • To submit evaluations, attendance sheets and reports each month to the Project assistant.
  • Monitor, follow-up and report on learner absences in classes and report this to the Project assistant.
  • Be open for and participative in monitoring and supervision to improve the quality of the program.
  • To prepare Schemes of work
  • To prepare Lesson plans and lesson notes,
  • To prepare record of work covered
  • To prepare Learners’ evaluation and progress records
  • To prepare Stock records for all training materials, tools and equipment in your work station.

Qualifications

  • One should be a trained teacher.
  • Experience from working as a teacher in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Knowledge about own skills/profile
  • Some knowledge of English
  • Have at least 3 years post training teaching experience in Primary School, pre-primary or any other formal or non-formal learning institution.
  • Experience in community development initiatives
  • High level of personal integrity and sensitivity to adult psychology.
  • High standard of English methodology including oral skills.
  • Knowledge on use participatory and learner centred methods, children rights and the global education standards.
  • Have knowledge and experience in some of the following topics: counselling trauma in children, children with special needs, child protection
  • Basic understanding of the local language is desirable.
  • Understanding of the basic entrepreneurial skills will be an added advantage
