1.         Organizational context

 

The post of translator is located in the Chinese Translation Section of the Language Division of the Administration and Management Sector.

 

The Language Division is responsible for delivering comprehensive and high-quality language services in relation to\: the translation of treaties and other international instruments administered by WIPO, national legislative texts, documents for the Assemblies of Member States, publications, reports of meetings and conferences and working documents for committees of experts and other bodies, and the WIPO website; and the provision of interpretation services for the meetings of the WIPO Assemblies, committees and meetings organized by the various sectors.

 

The incumbent undertakes translation work in Chinese that meets quality and quantity standards, and participates in terminology and other related work.

 

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the Chinese Translation Section.

 

 

2.         Duties and responsibilities

 

The incumbent performs the following principal duties\:

 

(a)       Translate and self-revise documents on a wide range of political, legal, administrative, scientific and technical subjects from English into Chinese and vice versa.

 

(b)       Edit texts to ensure linguistic quality, clarity, accuracy and conformity with established WIPO terminology and style.

 

(c)       Provide translation and related services during conferences and high-level meetings.

 

(d)       Participate in terminology work by creating, adding and verifying Chinese terms in the database for validation by the supervisor.

 

(e)       Carry out linguistic research and prepare glossaries, technical vocabularies and related data collections.

 

(f)        Participate in the development and use of computer-assisted-translation and terminology (CATT) tools and provide regular feedback and make proposals for improvements.

 

(g)       Upon request, participate in quality control work including revising translations of temporary and external translators.

 

(h)       Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

3.         Requirements

 

Education

Essential

First-level university degree in modern languages, linguistics, translation or related discipline. An advanced university degree in a relevant discipline may be accepted in lieu of two years of experience.

Experience

Essential

At least six years of relevant professional work experience in translation, editing and using CATT tools, mainly acquired in international organizations.

Languages

Essential

Mother tongue level of Chinese and excellent knowledge of English.

Desirable

Knowledge of other official UN languages.

Good translation and editing skills, with the ability to produce accurate, clear and stylistically appropriate translations.

Ability to work rapidly and accurately within strict time limits.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

Competent user of Microsoft Office applications (e.g. Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and the Internet.

 

Desirable

          Knowledge of the subject matter dealt with by WIPO.

5.         Information

 

Mobility\:  Candidates appointed to an international position with WIPO are subject to mobility and may be assigned to any activity or duty station of the Organization throughout the world.

 

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances.  The figures quoted below are based on the March 2017 rate of 79.5%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
