WASH Project Assistant – Hargeisa Somaliland (National Position) - Somalia
The NRC Somalia Country Programme is part of the NRC Horn of Africa, Yemen, Uganda and South Sudan regional mission. Operations in the region began in Somali land in 2004, expanded to Puntland in 2006, South Central Somalia and Kenya in 2007.Since 2011, five more programmes have been established in the region: Ethiopia, Yemen, Djibouti, South Sudan & Uganda. Prioritized activities focus on shelter construction; water, hygiene and sanitation;education; food security; protection and information, counselling and legal Assistance (ICLA). The Regional Office is situated in Kenya (Nairobi), with a country office in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), Juba (South Sudan), Mogadishu (Somalia), Sana'a (Yemen), Djibouti and Adjumani (Uganda)

The WASH Assistant is to ensure effective implementation of the identified WASH needs and activities through assessment and surveys. These activities include water trucking, community mobilization, water facilities rehabilitation/repair, hygiene promotion and sanitation campaigns.
Job descriptionGeneric responsibilities:
Ensure adherence with NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
Implement delegated WASH project portfolio according to plan of action
Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
Ensure proper filing of documents
Ensure that projects target beneficiaries most in need, and explore and asses new and better ways to assist
Monitor and report on the WASH project activities and ensure compliance with plans and NRC standards
Mobilize communities and community leaders for the building materials, construction activities and maintenance of structures
Suggest new methods and approaches in order to improve the quality of the activities
Report all protection related concerns in the field
Carry out data collection as required
Support implementation of water trucking activities under NRC in Somaliland
Conduct community meetings and carry out FGDS (focus group discussions) with selected groups.
Together with the Monitoring and Evaluation unit carry out periodic monitoring and evaluation of WASH activities.
Community mobilization and registration
With Project Officer/Coordinator: support, prepare/provide project needed information for reporting and proposal development
Overseeing procurement and distribution of hygiene kits
Update and maintain all WASH filing system including contracts, beneficiary lists, reports e.g. (Field visit, monthly and quarterly reports)
Attend WASH meetings and providing meeting updates
Facilitate appropriate community involvement in the design and delivery of essential WASH services and facilities.
Conduct hygiene promotion activities in the IDP camps and schools under guidance of the WASH Officer.
Carry out informal and formal training sessions (according to identified needs) and evaluate the impacts of this training.
Raise the awareness on issues relevant to the community and encourage their participation in projects
Ensure mainstreaming of all cross-cutting issues in implementation of activities
Prepare field visit reports or as required internally by NRC as well as relevant donors
Carry out any other WASH related duties/assignments assigned by the supervisor.
Min 2yrs experience from working in WASH in a humanitarian/recovery context
Diploma or higher in Public Health, Community Health, community development or any other relevant qualification
Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
Experience of working with IDPs related issues would be preferred
Knowledge of English and local language
Context/ Specific skills, knowledge and experience:
Knowledge of the operating context in Somaliland
Knowledge of Somali language
Experience in water trucking, latrine construction, hygiene promotion or community mobilization
