1.      Organizational Context

 

a.      Organizational Setting

 

The post is located in the PCT Translation Division in the PCT Services Department of the Patents and Technology Sector. The PCT Translation Division is responsible for delivering high-quality publication-ready translation in relation to patent applications filed under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).  In particular, the PCT Translation Division is responsible for the translation of scientific, technical and legal documents, mainly the abstracts of international patent applications and scientific, technical and legal reports relating to the patentability of inventions.

 

b.      Purpose Statement

 

As part of the English Translation Section, the incumbent is required to assess translation quality, respond to linguistic queries, translate and self-revise specialized scientific and technical texts from German [and one other PCT language] into English, provide training to translators, participate in terminology compilation, select and assess translation tests, and be familiar with a wide variety of translation and terminology-related technology.

 

c.      Reporting Lines

 

The incumbent works under the supervision of the Head of the English Translation Section.

 

 

2.      Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties\:

 

a.   Assess the quality of translations provided by the Division’s translation suppliers (internal and outsourced) in a wide range of scientific and technical subjects for accuracy of meaning and terminology; revise the translations of in-house translators as needed;

 

b.   Provide detailed, comprehensive and authoritative answers on a variety of linguistic issues to translation suppliers including agencies, freelancers, and internal translators;

 

c.   Translate and self-revise texts in a wide range of scientific and technical subjects from German and one other PCT language into English meeting the standards of quality, quantity and timeliness of the Division;

 

d.   Train, mentor and provide feedback to translators, translation trainees (fellows) and newly contracted agencies in the translation of technical documents from German and one other PCT language into English and on the specifics of PCT translation;  contribute to the development of reusable training materials; prepare guidelines and reference materials for the improvement of quality; and provide input to the definition and implementation of quality assurance measures for the PCT Translation Division;

 

e.   Participate in the compilation of the terminology database of the PCT Translation Division;

 

f.    Participate in the selection and assessment of translation tests to identify suitable candidates for employment and external translation providers;

 

g.   Use and participate in the development of computer-assisted translation and terminology tools, providing regular feedback on and recommendations for their application within the Division; and perform the post-editing of machine translations for data collection, providing feedback on request;

 

h.   Perform other related duties as required.

 

 

3.      Requirements

 

 

Education (Essential)

Advanced university degree in a technical or scientific field, translation or modern languages, or in a related field; alternatively, a professional, technical or legal diploma equivalent to an advanced university degree. A first-level university degree in one of the aforementioned subjects plus an additional two years of relevant professional experience in addition to the essential experience mentioned below may be accepted in lieu of the advanced degree.

 

 

Experience (Essential)

For an advanced university degree, nine years, and for a first-level university degree, eleven years, of relevant professional experience, mainly in technical or scientific translation.  A candidate with less than nine years but more than six years of relevant experience and holding an advanced university degree will be considered and, subject to being assessed as the best candidate, will be appointed at the P3 grade.  A candidate with less than 11 years but more than eight years of relevant experience and holding a first-level university degree will be considered and, subject to being assessed as the best candidate, will be appointed at the P3 grade.

 

Experience (Desirable)

Work experience combining work in a technical or scientific field or in the field of intellectual property with translation.

 

Language (Essential)

Mother tongue level of English and excellent knowledge of German (first translation language) and at least one other PCT publication language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian or Spanish).

 

Language (Desirable)

Knowledge of Arabic or Portuguese.

 

Job Related Competencies (Essential)

Advanced translation, revision, editing, and quality assessment skills, with an ability to produce accurate and idiomatically correct translations in line with established translation guidelines and an ability to give authoritative and meaningful feedback to others on translation.

Ability to grasp scientific, technical and legal issues in a wide variety of fields.

Ability to train and provide guidance to translators.

Good knowledge of translation technology and software tools that aid the translation process.

Ability to work accurately and respect strict deadlines.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills and an ability to maintain effective partnerships and working relations in a multi-cultural environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity.

5.         Information

 

Mobility\:  Candidates appointed to an international position with WIPO are subject to mobility and may be assigned to any activity or duty station of the Organization throughout the world.

 

Annual salary\:

Total annual salary consists of a net annual salary (net of taxes and before medical insurance and pension fund deductions) in US dollars and a post adjustment.  The post adjustment (cost of living allowance) is variable and subject to change without notice in accordance with the rates as set within the UN Common System for salaries and allowances.  The figures quoted below are based on the March 2017 rate of 79.3%

Salaries and allowances are paid in Swiss francs at the official rate of exchange of the United Nations.

Additional Information

 

Initial period of two years, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.
