Introduction
The Danish Refugee Council
(DRC) is a humanitarian, non-governmental and non-profit organization that
works in more than 35 countries around the world. DRC has recently established
a presence in Greece where aims at delivering immediate assistance and
protection-guided emergency response to refugees and migrants based on
international humanitarian standards and in line with the Greek government
strategy.
Background
DRC has been operating in
Greece since December 2015, providing support to the Greek Ministry of
Migration Policy in ensuring dignified reception conditions for refugees and
migrants arriving on Lesvos island. In March 2016, DRC expanded its operations
in Athens, Thessaloniki and Larisa in
response to the changing context and the build-up of refugee population on
mainland Greece.
Purpose
Under the close technical supervision
of the Senior Legal Aid Officer and under the management of the Attica Field Protection
Manager, the Legal Aid Officer will receive referred cases to be followed up on
site, deliver info sessions on asylum-related legal matters and assist with
different cases regarding the rights of asylum seekers, in close coordination
with the DRC Protection Teams.
Furthermore, the Legal
Aid Officer will develop and maintain good relations with the persons of
concern, relevant stakeholders and other humanitarian actors, to support high
quality implementation and coordination of DRC’s Protection and Legal Aid activities.
Duties and
Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include,
but not be limited, to the following:
- Work in close cooperation with the Senior Legal Aid officer and the protection teams in Attica and with DRC’s legal aid partner; continuously monitor and document the needs of the Persons of Concern (PoC).
- Identify cases in need of legal aid to be referred.
- Handle identified cases according to the needs.
- Collaborate with legal aid partners to provide individual counselling and information about international protection, including access to asylum.
- Provide individual counselling and legal assistance to Persons of Concern in administrative procedures regarding issuing birth certificate, tax number, work permit and the like.
- Provide legal info sessions regarding the asylum procedures, rights and obligations of an asylum seeker or other relevant legal topics.
- Monitor and analyze the legal procedures for advocacy purposes.
- Provide legal aid statistics.
- Document case studies, best practices and lessons learned from each of the activities implemented.
- Any other duties as may be assigned, relevant to the achievement of protection objectives.
Required
Qualifications
- Law degree and relevant experience with refugee/migration law and humanitarian law
- Lawyers’ license is an added advantage
- Excellent verbal and written English and Greek skills.
- At least three years working experience in a related field; previous working experience with local or international NGOs will be considered as a strong advantage
- Strong computer skills

Terms and
Conditions
All work-related transport costs from duty
station to other work sites are refundable.
All work-related communication costs are
refundable.
The position will be based in Attica (Greece),
including visiting the sites of Elliniko, Skaramagas, Elefsina and Rafina; national
terms and conditions apply.
General Regulations
The
employee shall follow DRC instructions on safety, confidentiality and ethical
guidelines, including the Code of Conduct and the Humanitarian Accountability
Framework.
The
employee should not engage in any other paid activity during the DRC contract
period without prior authorization.
The
employee should not engage in any activity that could harm DRC or the
implementation of any project during the DRC contract period.
The
employee should not give interviews to the media or publish project-related
photos or other material without prior authorization.
The
employee shall return all borrowed equipment for the project to DRC after the
end of the contract period or upon request.
