Under the overall guidance of the Chief of Performance Management and Career Development (PMCD) and the Career Development Manager, the consultant will support career development, performance management and/or transition programmes for UNICEF staff. The consultant will also design and deliver face to face performance management and career development workshops, and ToT (Training of Trainer) workshops for different country or regional offices upon request. The consultant will provide coaching in relation to performance management, career management and counselling as appropriate. Reports should be provided detailing the types of work and any recommendations.

Purpose of the Assignment

Under the overall guidance of the Chief of Performance Management and Career Development (PMCD) and the Career Development Manager, the consultant will support career development, performance management and/or transition programmes for UNICEF staff. The consultant will also design and deliver face to face performance management and career development workshops, and ToT (Training of Trainer) workshops for different country or regional offices upon request. The consultant will provide coaching in relation to performance management, career management and counselling as appropriate. Reports should be provided detailing the types of work and any recommendations.

Assignment Tasks

The project will involve:

 

Counselling/coaching sessions:

Each session should be two hours long and will be made up of pre and post work (one hour), and coaching/counselling (one hour).

1) Preparation for each session: Consultant must contact each individual prior to the session to introduce themselves, determine best method for communication, provide pre-coaching material, set expectations for structure of meeting and determine what areas the individual would like to focus on during the session.

2) Counselling/coaching session: Consultant must conduct each session via telephone or Skype with staff member covering topics and exercises targeting their individual needs. This may include identifying specific areas for growth, creating goals that are mutually agreed upon and measurable, outlining next steps (timeline and resources), reviewing cover letters and/or resumes, conducting mock interviews, and guiding staff members through job search process or through career transitions (i.e. preparing for retirement).

3) Post session follow-up: Consultant must follow up (as needed) to measure progress, provide support, forward appropriate resources, summarize session and provide timeline for next follow-up. Resources may include but are not limited to, links to career fairs, tips on creating job posting alerts, skill building resources, and articles on interviewing/job searching.

4) Submission of final report: Consultant will be provided template outlining the individuals served, level and nature of sessions, and relevant trends observed (while maintaining appropriate confidentiality); the report will be submitted upon request from DHR.  Report will be submitted to DHR/PMCD upon completion of any trip, session, and/or on a monthly basis, if needed.

Workshops:

1) Design of Workshop Material: Projects may be related to various areas of HR, such as HR Capacity Building, Performance Management, Organizational Development and Career Development. Design work responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, focus group discussions, attending team meetings, drafting cost proposals/reports, coordination and follow-up.

2) International Travel: Consultants may be requested to travel internationally to UNICEF Offices in Europe, Asia, Pacific, Africa, Caribbean and Latin America for group training workshops on career development, performance management and ToT (Training of Trainer), and conduct face to face career coaching/counselling sessions after the trainings (depending on the workshop).

3) Submission of final report: Consultant will provide a short synopsis, reporting individuals served, level and nature of workshops, and relevant trends observed (while maintaining appropriate confidentiality).  Report will be submitted to DHR/PMCD upon completion of any trip, session, and/or on a monthly basis.

Expected Deliverables

Based on timeframe and strategy determined by DHR/PMCD, the Consultant will be required to do the following:

  • Provide staff members with individual sessions (phone, in person, or Skype) for career counseling or performance coaching.
  • Coordinate effective communication to understand individual needs and prepare targeted materials/content prior to and post individual counselling/coaching sessions
  • Review applications and/or resumes, PHPs, provide interview support, guide staff members through job search process and an agreed upon action plan.
  • Travel to deliver face to face workshop sessions for career development, performance management and ToT (Training of Trainer) workshops across various UNICEF offices globally (upon request)
  • Design presentation slides, workbooks and/or short user guides to accompany group training workshops, if/when necessary
  • Submission of monthly invoice, providing DHR with the following:
    • Short synopsis to DHR/PMCD following all counseling, coaching and training sessions, noting the nature of the service provided, as well as the staff members who took advantage of the service and the unit the staff member belongs to. For group trainings, consultant must report on relevant trends observed, and provide recommendations for follow-up. Maintain appropriate confidentiality in reports on individual sessions.

 

Please submit your hourly rate for Counselling/coaching sessions and your daily rate for workshops.

Qualifications of Successful Candidate

Education

Masters degree in a HR related field (i.e organizational psychology); certification in coaching/counselling is highly desirable.

Years of relevant experience

Minimum of 10 years of organizational development experience, specifically in performance management and career development trainings, career coaching/counselling and design work.  International work and prior work experience in UN system is highly desirable.  The consultant must be fluent in English; fluency in another UN language (Spanish, French, Russian, Arablic and  Chinese) is an asset.
