Social media have become important communication platforms and are replacing long-established news and entertainment channels.

We no longer live in a world were one or a few broadcasters and publishing houses dictate our access to news and entertainment. While traditional media mainly communicated from broadcaster to audience, social media allows for two-way communication and “horizontal” communication as we share content with family, friends, allies and opponents.
We use social media not only to obtain information, but to filter and select what content we want to access and to show support, vocalise our opinions and mobilise around courses.

For an organisation like NRC this entails great opportunities and risks. In the new media reality, reaching out to broad audiences not only entails being present in multiple channels, but also being present with content that stands out and resonates with audiences.

Social media’s growing importance is reflected in NRC’s communication and fundraising strategies. The 2017 media project aims to operationalize these strategies.
