Under the direct supervision of the Head of the High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics Section, the incumbent will initiate, develop and coordinate competitive research and training programmes in the field of Cosmology, High Energy Physics, Particle Physics and/or Astroparticle Physics. This includes studies of the nature of theoretical high-energy physics with emphasis on quantum field theory, string theory and related areas including quantum gravity, holography, and models of particle physics and cosmology. In particular, s/he will\:

  • Undertake front-line research in Theoretical High Energy Physics.  Suggest, develop and realize scientific projects in areas of theoretical high-energy physics. Lead a research team and report on the results of the research at major international meetings.
  • Establish and maintain scientific contacts with leading centres around the world, where research is conducted in his/her areas of expertise. Act as liaison between these centres and the High Energy, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics Section of ICTP.
  • Establish wide cooperation with scientists from developing countries, identify the scientific needs of developing countries and formulate the appropriate recommendations for incorporation within ICTP's programmes.
  • Assist the Supervisor in the organization of ICTP scientific meetings as well as training programmes.
  • Lecture in the High Energy Diploma and other programmes, supervise Diploma thesis and participate in joint PhD programmes with Italian institutions.


  • Advanced University degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) in Theoretical High Energy Physics, Cosmology, Astrophysics or Astroparticle Physics, or related field.


  • A minimum of 4 years of relevant scientific research experience at the national and international levels.
  • Demonstrated professional experience in the field of High Energy Physics, Cosmology, Astrophysics or Astroparticle Physics.
  • Experience in the design, implementation and management of scientific projects.


  • Proven ability to initiate and execute scientific projects.
  • Strong analytical and organisational skills. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively on complex technical and scientific issues.
  • Capacity to build and maintain partnerships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary and multicultural environment.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).


  • Excellent/very good knowledge of English.


  • Demonstrated experience in the teaching and/or mentoring of undergraduate or postgraduate students.
  • Experience in the development and coordination of scientific training programmes.
