The Principal of Landscapes, Agroforestry and Agribusiness Development will implement the agroforestry and agribusiness workstream by working closely with GGGI’s in-country teams and producing outputs that catalyze implementation and are immediately deployable/applicable. The Principal shall also contribute to the expansion of GGGI’s international role and presence by presenting its outputs at international events, building relationships with other development/research organizations, and participating in joint partnerships/initiatives.

The Investment and Policy Solutions Division (IPSD), based at GGGI's Seoul headquarters works with programs in countries and on (global) projects, by:

  • Providing technical and financial know-how through advice to country programs in the areas of energy, green cities, landscapes and water;
  • Working with the Green Growth Planning and Implementation Division (GGP&I) on the development of service offerings (in GGGI’s four main focus areas) and related methodologies (delivery approaches);
  • Converting experience gained through country activities and engagement in international networks into elements of South-South cooperation programs, sub-regional knowledge sharing programs and national level capacity building activities;
  • Developing global level tools such as the Green Growth Potential Assessment methodology and flagship products (such as the planned Green Growth Index);
  • Contributing to the preparation of corporate communication material;
  • Managing GGGI’s involvement in knowledge management networks such as the Green Growth Knowledge Platform or other international platforms as appropriate.

The Division expects to expand its technical capacity and broaden intellectual base by hiring a Principal for Agroforestry and Agribusiness Development, Landscapes, particularly on policy analysis, development of market-based approaches, and knowledge sharing in business development of agroforestry and agribusiness commodity enterprises, to support GGGI develop cost effecitve market systems, and reduce risks for investors and smallholder farmers through innovative market, policy and investment solutions.

GGGI wishes to support client countries and counterparts take an integrated approach to solving major landscapes issues through a combination of finance, policy, and knowledge sharing. The role of this position is to advocate for such an approach through innovative projects/programs that influence a new way of thinking on agroforestry and agribusiness development and green growth.

GGGI has an expanded global portfolio in developing countries managing a diverse set of programs and projects focused on four key thematic areas of energy, green cities, water, and landscapes, which hold significant potential in achieving green growth in developing countries. Accordingly, the Policy Solutions department is divided into four thematic streams, with each stream delivering policy advice to projects and programs in countries; conducting sector assessments, designing relevant models, assessing technology options where relevant; engaging with the GIS and country teams at the time of project identification, design, preparation and structuring; and leading the content side of GGGI knowledge sharing programs. The thematic streams also strive to contribute to the global debate on issues related to green growth and to that extent engages with global partnerships on an as-relevant basis.

The Landscapes theme is designed to transform landbased sectors through policy and investment solutions which result in increased productivity, profitability and sustainability for all stakeholders. There is a strong economic rationale why healthy and resilient landscapes with interconnected ecosystems are seen by GGGI as critical driver of green growth. Fostering resource efficient and cost effective land-practices (producing more with less) while reducing poverty, securing food and boosting local jobs can reduce these costs and significantly contribute to the delivery of country level NDCs and SDGs targets. GGGI works on policies and investment solutions to support sustainable agroforestry and agribusinesses in originating and designing innovative business models and market systems that will attract green capital and reduce risks in investments

PURPOSE

  • Identifying, refining, and expanding a niche for GGGI value-add in agroforestry/agribusiness sector with an aim to increase productivity, profitability and sustainability for optimal land-use across the broader landscape benefiting a variety of stakeholders and supporting countries in meeting NDC and SDG targets
  • Originating agroforestry/agribusiness projects advancing (bio-) technology and policy solutions which reflects country needs, drive investment and contributes to the organization’s strategic objectives to support countries in food & livelihood security and environmental sustainability
  • Working with the Green Growth Planning and Implementation Division (GGP&I) and the Green Investment Services department on the development of service offerings for agroforestry/agribusiness sector, and associated “delivery” methods (i.e. “how” GGGI will engage/what GGGI will do)
  • Providing innovative/novel technical know-how and content-based advice to country programs specifically related to production, processing, distribution of agroforestry and agribusiness products and commodities, value chain development and upgrading strategies, improved access to inputs, extensions and markets
  • Advocating for green growth through analytical insights gained from country activities, elements of South-South cooperation programs, findings from regional knowledge sharing programs, and outcomes of national level capacity building activities;
  • Defining and reshaping project processes and cycles to ensure effective delivery
  • Managing GGGI’s involvement at international forums, knowledge networks and other forums
  • Fostering technological innovation through the use of biological resources, added value generation, and smart market systems.

ENGAGEMENT

By partnering with in-house and external experts or organizations who have contributed to mainstreaming green growth in agroforestry and agribusiness, the role of the Principal is to leverage that knowledge and expertise, as well as the unique culture GGGI has built globally, and serve as the ultimate trusted advisor to our partner countries. 

The position will work in the IPSD Landscapes Theme, Policy Solution Department, to assess, align, and develop business models and related policies conducive to moving on-the-ground projects towards their eventual accessing of finance, and financial/investment aspects of which will be carried out by other teams. S/he shall effectively communicating with other relevant staff to collaborate in translating thematic agenda into innovative service offerings and in-country initiatives.

S/he shall originate knowledge sharing programs concerning agroforestry and agribusiness development to contribute towards the building of a knowledge sharing program.

S/he will represent GGGI in national and international forums and other key meetings and events, and secure buy-in and active involvement of stakeholders in order to contribute towards bankable projects in agroforestry and agribusiness industry as well as knowledge development and expansion of GGGI’s Landscapes portfolio. S/he will build and maintain partnerships with governments, development agencies, leading (bio-) technology and research institutions, and the private sectors working in [the agroforestry and agribusiness commodities industries].

DELIVERY

The major deliverables are to originate innovative projects and initiatives in the agroforestry and agribusiness sector that move beyond the conventional framework, adapt these service offerings in line with the needs of partner governments, provide technical support to in-country programs and to contribute to thought leadership and knowledge sharing, analyze best practices and lessons learned of in-country programs or (potential) member countries that can be fed into the Green Growth Knowledge Platform, and work closely with the GIS department to translate agroforestry and agribusiness project ideas into financing and investment.

In doing so, the general role of Principal, Agroforestry and Agribusiness Development Sector is to work with GGGI in-country teams to originate and expand thematic programs/projects as well as other collaborative projects on thought leadership and knowledge sharing. Tasks include:

  • Originating innovative projects and refining/expanding existing ones to reflect country needs and corporate objectives as outlined in GGGI Strategic Plan 2015-2020 and biennium Work Program and Budget 2017-18.
  • Scoping, identifying, and assessing innovative technology, policy/incentives and investment solutions for bankable project development through consultation with technology providers, bioeconomy industries, private sector, financial institutions, government stakeholders, jointly with country teams.
  • Planning, leading and developing applied/practical knowledge products and project outputs relevant to agroforestry/agribusiness in accordance with thematic focus areas and service offerings.
  • Conducting expert review on project outputs for quality control.
  • Defining the project cycle to ensure integration between policy, financing, and knowledge sharing outputs for a given country program.
  • Conceptualizing the development of innovative implementable products and solutions in [agroforestry and agribusiness enterprises] including drafting substantive papers such as working papers, policy briefs, country case studies, and analytical papers on salient landbased issues based on consultation with relevant stakeholders;
  • Mentoring staff and building their capacity with respect to the understanding of agroforestry and agribusiness-related topics, relevant skill-sets, and general project management.
  • Advocating for green growth and demonstrate GGGI’s thought leadership by participating in internal / external events such as seminars, training sessions, knowledge sharing events on agroforestry and agribusiness-related topics;

 

REQUIREMENTS

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An advanced degree (Masters) relevant to agroforestry and/or agribusiness, agriculture economics is a requirement; a technical specialization in agronomy, biotechnology/bioeconomy, value chain development, market systems, and regional/international trade policy related topics.
  • A minimum of 8 years of relevant professional experience with at least 3 years work experience in a for-profit agribusiness
  • Must have applied experience - no exceptions.
  • Proven technical and business development experience in developing countries in the agroforestry/ agribusiness sector with smallholder farmers/SMEs;
  • Proven managerial skills to lead a team effectively and deliver expected outputs on time and manage multi-cultural team.
  • Experience in providing advisory services in relevant land-use policy, and fiscal incentives related to SME development is a strong asset;
  • Experience in climate change, gender mainstraiming in smallholder-farming, rural finance or risk mitigation instruments is an additional asset;
  • Experience in international organizations working with developing countries is a strength.  Proven records of providing policy advisory services to developing countries are a plus.
  • Fluent in English, knowledge of another relevant language is an asset.
