The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization experienced in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. In the light of the high influx of migrants to the Greek islands, NRC has started an emergency response programme on the island of Chios in mid-October 2015. NRC directly assisted over 70,000 refugees and migrants, working together with the Greek authorities, humanitarian actors and volunteers to set up and maintain a dignified and efficient flow of refugees from arrival at the beach, via registration and reception facilities, to departure by boat or plane to mainland Greece. The purpose of the WASH Technical Assistant position is to provide administrative or technical support in Shelter/WASH - in camps Project.

Job description

  • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
  • Assist a range of support with the implementation of the WASH portfolio according to plan of action
  • Implements independently procedures and activities within WASH as delegated
  • Responsible for organizing and delivery of tasks in line with priorities and standards
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of the specialist area of work in which technical assistance and support is being provided, in order to be most effective in supporting the team
  • Use initiative in day to day problem solving in line with agreed procedures, priorities and standards for the area of work
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
  • Ensure proper filing of documents
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement in your area of expertise
  • Work in partnership with the host refugee populations in the camps, municipality workers and other organisations to promote safe WASH practices
  • Help identify needs for non-food items relevant to hygiene, participate in the choice of items, targeting strategy, distribution, promotion of effective use, and post-distribution monitoring.
  • Support the creation of distribution plans and implement these when required.
  • Mobilize communities to identify priority public health issues, hygiene promotion activities
  • Carry out Hygiene Promotion activities
  • Enhance communication and contact with communities by engaging with community members to discuss action plans, mobilize community participation and, through this, to act as a mentor throughout the planning and implementation processes.
  • Work with non-WASH programs (Shelter and SMS) to provide consistent community messaging and information about NRC services.
  • Train community members, municipal workers and local partners on improving hygiene related conditions and carry out targeted hygiene promotion campaigns depending on the needs.
  • Carry out stock control and distribution activities both routine and emergency, as required
  • Collect, compile and submit all monitoring and evaluation data required to document activities and material and stock needs.
  • Support the development of technical specifications for requests and quotations

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of health, hygiene, teaching, or community development
  • Knowledge of stock management
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Some knowledge of English
  • Knowledge and experience regarding Veria and Alexandria refugee camps
  • Fluency in Greek, verbal and written
  • Fluency in Arabic, verbal and written
  • Valid driver’s license
