To strengthen the capacity to respond immediately to the needs of our beneficiaries when a crisis occurs, NRC established an Emergency Response Team (ERT) in 2012 consisting of a team of 3. From 2017 we increased the capacity to three teams. The ERTs will be deployed both to support NRC Country Offices in their response to an emergency and to emergencies in countries where NRC has no prior presence. These teams can then be enhanced with emergency roster personnel and national staff, depending on what is needed for the specific emergency.

NRC is now recruiting for a new Logistics and Distribution Specialist for one of our Emergency Response Teams.

Job description

  • The main duty is to select and implement logistics- and ICT systems/mechanisms suited to the humanitarian context and ensure the implementation of relevant technology and methods.
  • Together with other team members identify the most rapid and effective method of providing assistance to the people affected by the emergency, in consultation with affected communities, when needed.
  • Set-up distribution systems for delivery of humanitarian aid in collaboration with the programme team
  • Contribute to the assessment of the need for NRC’s presence in affected countries, with emergency programmes based on its core competencies, and the identification of appropriate programme strategies to address these needs in a rapid and cost effective manner.
  • Until more long-term NRC staff is present, responsible for the selection and procurement of emergency materials; developing and supervising the distribution plans for these materials; and monitoring the effectiveness of NRC’s emergency support activities.
  • Provide input on programme strategies, work plans, progress towards objectives; and operational constraints to Emergency Team Leader, as applicable.
  • Actively participate in coordination mechanisms involving UN agencies, other NGOs, government authorities, and local organizations (including IASC cluster meetings),
  • To increase the capacity of local staff and communities to respond to future emergencies, provide close supervision of field activities and deliver technical inputs.

Qualifications

  • Experienced and proactive field worker with minimum 5 years of emergency Logistics experience from complex emergencies and/or natural disasters
  • Ideally good understanding of cash based approaches along with experience in integrated programming across various sectors
  • Experience in distribution
  • Experience from working in an NRC programme and understanding of its systems and working methods an asset
  • Experience from coordination mechanisms, in particular within the emergency logistics
  • Fluency in French and English, both oral and written. Other languages an asset
  • Holder of valid international driver's licence

Personal qualities

  • Willingness and interest to work in emergency situations and insecure contexts.
  • Need to be highly flexible in tasks.
