The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is a non-governmental, humanitarian organization experienced in helping to create a safer and more dignified life for refugees and internally displaced people. In the light of the high influx of migrants to the Greek islands, NRC has started an emergency response programme on the island of Chios in mid-October 2015. NRC directly assisted over 70,000 refugees and migrants, working together with the Greek authorities, humanitarian actors and volunteers to set up and maintain a dignified and efficient flow of refugees from arrival at the beach, via registration and reception facilities, to departure by boat or plane to mainland Greece. NRC Thessaloniki is now looking forward to cover the position Shelter/WASH Technical Assistant - Plumber
to respond to the humanitarian needs.

The purpose of the Shelter/WASH Technical Assistant position is to provide administrative or technical support in Shelter/WASH - in camps Project. He is mainly focused on management/maintenance of water networks, WASH facilities and heating systems.

Job description

  • Adhere to NRC policies, tools, handbooks and guidelines
  • Assist a range of support with the implementation of the Shelter/WASH portfolio according to plan of action
  • Implements independently procedures and activities within Shelter/WASH as delegated
  • Responsible for organizing and delivery of tasks in line with priorities and standards
  • Develop and maintain knowledge of the specialist area of work in which technical assistance and support is being provided, in order to be most effective in supporting the team
  • Use initiative in day to day problem solving in line with agreed procedures, priorities and standards for the area of work
  • Prepare and develop status reports as required by management
  • Ensure proper filing of documents
  • Promote and share ideas for improvement in your area of expertise
  • Ensure regular maintenance and repairs of the central heating and water boilers’ systems
  • Ensure regular maintenance and repairs of water network and WASH facilities (tap stands, bathrooms, toilets…)
  • Ensure supervision of works implemented by external contractors and related to water supply or heating systems
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical documentation and drawings, bill of quantities (BoQ) and estimation of costs and support in preparation of tender documents to facilitate the procurement procedure.
  • Support the development of technical specifications for requests and quotations.
  • Assists others WASH/Shelter team members during implementation of their activities related to electrical systems or construction works.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience related to plumbing and heating systems,
  • Post-secondary education in a technical field (Plumber and specialist of heating systems are preferred)
  • Knowledge and experience related to electric works is a plus
  • Documented proof of achieving results
  • Experience from working in a humanitarian/recovery context
  • Previous experience from working in complex and volatile contexts
  • Documented results related to the position’s responsibilities
  • Fluency in Greek, verbal and written
  • Knowledge of English (oral and/or oral)
  • Knowledge of Arab, verbal and written is an asset
  • Knowledge/experience in Veria and Alexandria camps is an asset
  • Valid driver’s license
  • an asset
