The Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC) of the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is the global leader in the provision of data, information and analysis on internal displacement.  IDMC monitors all situations of internal displacement, provides quantitative estimates of the numbers of IDPs worldwide, and develops research and analysis which seeks to better inform policy and operational decisions that affect the lives of internally displaced people IDMC is seeking to recruit a Researcher who will research and analyse the drivers and impacts of internal displacement in different country contexts.
The Researcher will build relationships and develop a resource network in countries and regions, produce and regularly update IDMC country pages, and provide support to other products, such as IDMC’s regular updates and analysis of internal displacement around the world.

Job description

1. Conduct research on displacement drivers, patterns and impacts for country pages, thematic reports and policy briefs.
2. Develop, maintain and nurture a global network of local and national academic institutions, humanitarian and development organisations (including NRC country offices), and experts as a resource base for IDMC’s regional and country analysis.
3. Lead the development and set-up a systematic maintenance and updating process for IDMC’s country pages, in cooperation with the Data & Analysis Department.
4. Maintain an updated set of country-specific and regional key messages for use in meetings and policy briefings.
5. Support to the production of IDMC’s Internal Displacement Updates, in cooperation with the Data and Analysis Department.
6. Research support the Policy & Research Department, under guidance from the Head of Department and in line with agreed priorities.
7. Drafting of country and context-specific content for briefing notes, presentations and reports in support of the Director and Heads of Department.
8. Liaise with and provide support to Communications Team, including in the development of website content.
9. Perform other duties in the department as appropriate.

Qualifications

Generic professional competencies:
• Master’s degree related to international development, migration, humanitarian affairs, disaster risk and climate change or related field
• Excellent communication skills and ability to represent the organisation
• Strong writing skills and ability to condense large amounts of data and analysis in an efficient manner
• Strong initiative and collaborative working style
• Fluency in English, both written and verbal – knowledge of another official UN language a plus

Specific skills, knowledge and experience:
• Knowledge of human mobility issues in the context of conflict, generalised violence, disasters and climate change, or development
• Experience of working with a diversity of institutions in different regional contexts, including universities, UN agencies, NGOs, national research institutes, and at different levels of seniority
• Ability and desire to develop networks and engage with new partners for country research and analysis
• Experience of analysing socio-economic and environmental conditions in different country contexts
• Experience of processing and analysing large amounts of data and qualitative information into concise and communicable briefing papers and information pieces
• Ability to question, understand and evaluate quantitative and qualitative research on internal displacement
• Proven ability to convey complex problems in accessible concepts and terms, both verbally and in writing and to adapt language and messaging for different audiences
• Proven ability to clearly communicate research findings and their global and regional policy relevance
• Ability to apply judgement in cooperation with partners, plan own work and manage conflicting priorities and tight deadlines
