The Pacific Community (SPC) invites applications for the position of Head of Online Content, located at its headquarters in Noumea, New Caledonia.

 

Description

The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, supporting development since 1947. We are an international development organisation owned and governed by our 26 country and territory members. In pursuit of sustainable development to benefit Pacific people, our organisation works across more than 20 sectors. We are known for our knowledge and innovation in such areas as fisheries science, public health surveillance, geoscience, and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.

Communications and Public Information is a central function under the Office of the Director-General, which is responsible for driving a strategic, integrated and contemporary approach to communications across our organisation. The team provides central coordination, capacity building and advice on communications and public information. It is responsible for managing the SPC brand and reputation and for developing organisation-wide strategies, policies and procedures to guide communications and its integration into SPC’s scientific and technical programmes. A central aim of the role will be achieving visibility of SPC’s results that are achieved in collaboration with our members and development partners, through improved media engagement and coordination within SPC.

The role - The Head of Online Content will oversee content management for the Pacific Community’s bilingual website and intranet site. The initial scope of work involves completing the web redevelopment and intranet merger projects.  The role will contribute to raising awareness of the impact of SPC’s work, including how the organisation is responding to the development priorities of Pacific Community members and contributing to the well-being of Pacific people. A central aim of the role will be achieving visibility of SPC’s results achieved in collaboration with its development partners and Pacific Community Members, through driving a fresh approach to online content for SPC.

This role will lead content strategy development and implementation for the SPC website – recognised as the organisation’s most important communication channel – and for internal online platforms. The position carries responsibility for the accuracy, timeliness and overall quality control of content in English and French on the SPC website and of existing intranet sites. The role requires high-level skills in writing and editing online content in English and French. This will include day-to-day oversight and management of the corporate sections of the website in English and French, including the home pages. It will involve extensive ongoing liaison with colleagues throughout SPC regarding content for other parts of the website. Aspects of this will include structure, content standards, functionality, improved internal processes and overseeing the quality of editorial content in English and French, imagery and the integration of audiovisual products.

Key selection criteria

Qualifications

  • A tertiary qualification in communications, media studies, online content/website development, marketing communications or international relations.

Technical expertise

  • A minimum of 10 years of relevant experience in online content management, writing or editing at a national or international level.
  • Proven ability to prioritise and manage scheduling of online content for large organisations.
  • Prior experience in a specialist online content management role in a corporate setting or development organisation.
  • Demonstrated leadership in online content strategy, including the ability to generate innovative ideas and coordinate staff in multiple geographic locations, across diverse thematic areas.
  • Demonstrated experience in establishing effective internal networks.
  • Ability to generate and upload content for websites and intranets.
  • Prior experience in WordPress or SharePoint are highly desirable.
  • Strong knowledge of the requirements of online platform monitoring and evaluation.
  • Excellent leadership and project management skills.
  • Excellent news sense.

Language skills

  • Professional proficiency in both French and English

Interpersonal skills and cultural awareness

  • Demonstrated cross-cultural skills and ability to work with team members from different cultural backgrounds

 

Salary, terms and conditions

Required starting date – This position is available immediately.

Contract duration – 3 years

Remuneration – The Head of Online Content is Band 10 position in SPC’s 2017 salary scale, with a starting salary range of SDR (special drawing rights) 3,355–4,098 per month, which converts to approximately XPF 502,847–614,134 (USD 4,664–5,696; EUR 4,242–5181). An offer of appointment for an initial contract will be made in the lower half of this range, with due consideration being given to experience and qualifications. Progression within the salary scale will be based on annual performance reviews. SPC salaries are not presently subject to income tax in New Caledonia.

Benefits for international staff employees based in NEW CALEDONIA – SPC provides subsidised housing in Noumea. Establishment and relocation grant, removal expenses, airfares, home leave, medical and life insurance, and education allowance are available for eligible employees and their recognised dependents. Employees are entitled to 25 days of annual leave and access to SPC’s Provident Fund (contributing 8% of salary, to which SPC adds a matching contribution).

Languages – SPC’s working languages are English and French.
