The Water Supply and Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC) is a global, multi-stakeholder membership and partnership organization that works with poor people, their organizations, governments, and small-scale entrepreneurs to improve sanitation and hygiene at scale. Founded in 1990, the Council maintains a membership of over 4,000 water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) professionals from over 80 countries.
The United Nations Office of Project Services (UNOPS) is the legal and administrative host of WSSCC. 

The mission of the Council is to ensure sustainable sanitation, better hygiene and safe drinking water for all people, with the focus on the poorest and most marginalized members of society in low- and middle-income countries in Africa and Asia.

To achieve its mission, WSSCC facilitates sector coordination at national, regional and global levels, and engages rights holders and duty bearers to adopt policy guidelines on menstrual hygiene and disability.

The Council also supports national sanitation and hygiene improvement programmes through its Global Sanitation Fund, coordinates knowledge platforms, and advocates on behalf of the 2.4 billion people without access to improved sanitation.  Read more at www.wsscc.org

WSSCC’s activities are structured in the following areas: Policy Advocacy, Evidence and Learning and the Global Sanitation Fund. The position is placed within the Media Relations and External Affairs programme of the External Affairs, Communications and Country Support Department.

As part of the 2017 – 2020 Strategic Plan, WSSCC has committed to sharpening its engagement with members to better reflect their strategic priorities.  The Council will intensify ongoing efforts to strengthen engagement with members, partners and key contacts; central to the successful delivery of its aims and objectives. 

The successful applicant will support the Senior Programme Officer in the management of the membership records, coordination of the organization’s collaboration with members around the world and implementation of the membership engagement plan.

Functional Responsibilities

The purpose of this role is to support WSSCC’s collaboration with its members by leveraging opportunities within the organization, the sector, and maximizing use of digital tools to increase the Secretariat’s engagement with its membership.

Under the supervision of the Senior Programme Officer, the post holder will perform the following tasks:

Membership Administration

  • Plan and oversee necessary enhancements in the functions and look and feel of the WSSCC members’ database in coordination with external consultants to ensure alignment with business needs;
  • Monitor, review and validate new members’ registration information in the database;
  • Keep the membership database clean and up to date and establish a plan for keeping this information current and member details accurate;
  • Develop the necessary materials and provide troubleshooting support to members for the registration process and closed Members’ Community;
  • Manage the online registration process through the external and internal facing platforms updates on the website form including coordination with web developers, testing and roll-out of updates to the form and regular monitoring;
  • Stay abreast of the latest practices and functionalities on the platforms to ensure effective administration of the membership.

Membership Engagement

  • Act as the organizational focal point for members’ services, support and enquiries in both English and French;
  • Liaise with departmental focal points to gather relevant updates, events or opportunities of interest to members as well as facilitate members’ involvement, where relevant;
  • Plan, maintain and lead the implementation of a yearly membership engagement calendar covering planned communications and activities with members to ensure the right flow of member communications (e.g. targeted mailings, newsletters, consultations, digital campaigns etc.);
  • Oversee external vendor and oversee enhancements of the Membership Online Community including enhancements, testing and roll-out;
  • Channel correspondence and coordinate requests for information from members with relevant WSSCC staff;
  • Oversee WSSCC communications with members;
  • Work with the Social Media Analyst to develop and implement a plan to engage members through social media platforms based on an analysis of in-country needs and user preferences;
  • Support the member-related aspects of the Steering Committee election process;
  • Ensure WSSCC is making best use of conferences and events to engage members;
  • Travel and attend events / conferences consistent with the direction of the Senior Programme Officer;
  • Monitor and develop mechanisms for reporting on membership engagement and a process for tracking active members through the database (tools, design, appearance, frequency);
  • Monitor and regularly update the WSSCC membership page using the organization’s CMS, coordinating enhancements with external vendors and developing ways to ensure its relevance for members.

Coordination of the Contacts Database

  • Coordinate the upload of contacts by departmental focal points;
  • Support the enhancements and developments of the database underway.

Support to the External Relations, Communications and Coordination Department

  • Serve as a member of a fast-moving, front office setting;
  • Undertake special time-bound assignments at the request of the Senior Programme Officer such acting as an internal resource person to support cross-departmental activities;
  • Provide support for member-targeted communications, when required.

Education

Advanced university degree (Masters or equivalent) in development studies, communications for development or international relations or a similar field. Bachelor’s degree in one of these disciplines with additional 2 years of relevant professional experience.
 

Experience

  • Minimum three years’ experience in membership data management or related fields. 
  • Previous experience in the WASH sector or other development field is desirable

Languages

Fluency in English and intermediate level of French is required.

Contract duration: One year initially, renewable subject to satisfactory performance and funding availability.
