Internship - Jordan Program

GGGI’s Jordan Office is seeking an intern to support program development in line with the implementation of the Ministry of Environment’s recently launched National Green Growth Plan (NGGP). The internship will allow students who are interested in becoming development practitioners apply the knowledge they have learned through their studies in the energy, waste, transport and/or water sectors in Jordan. This knowledge will be applied toward the development of GGGI’s five-year strategy of activities in Jordan.

Based in Seoul, The Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) is an intergovernmental organization founded to support and promote a model of economic growth known as "green growth", which targets key aspects of economic performance such a poverty reduction, job creation, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability. GGGI works with countries around the world, building their capacity and working collaboratively on green growth policies that can impact the lives of millions. The organization partners with countries, multilateral institutions, government bodies, and private sector to help build economies that grow strongly and are more efficient and sustainable in the use of natural resources, less carbon intensive, and more resilient to climate change. 

 

Can you be a GGGI intern?

  • Are you enrolled in a Master's or in a Ph.D. program, or in the final year of a Bachelor’s program?
  • Have you completed Bachelor’s, Masters or PHD Degree in last 12 months?
  • Are you between a first degree and graduate school (gap year)?
  • Do you have excellent command of English?

 

Things to keep in mind for interns:

  • Duration: The internship program lasts for at least three months and can be as long as six months. Once selected, interns must begin the internship either prior to or within 12 months of graduation.
  • Cost: GGGI interns are paid USD$500 per month. All costs related to travel, insurance, accommodation, and living expenses must be borne by either the interns or their sponsoring institutions.
  • Visa: GGGI will provide a supporting letter for visa. Interns will be responsible for obtaining and financing the necessary visas.
  • Travel: Intern will arrange and finance their travel to the internship location.
  • Medical insurance: Interns must present proof of valid medical insurance to GGGI.
  • Confidentiality: Interns must be discreet and keep confidential any and all unpublished information obtained during the course of the internship and may not publish any documents based on such information.
  • Academic Credit: Interns may get academic credit from their institution of higher education for the internship. Interns need to check with their university to confirm their academic credit policy for internships.

 

Current Opportunity

We are looking for a talented individual to work with us in the GGGI Jordan Office to conduct research and consultations with development practitioners, government and sectoral experts relating to Jordan’s renewable energy development experience, and consider how the successes, failures, and lessons learned can be applied to other sectoral contexts in Jordan.

The assignment will include the followings but not limited to:

  • GGGI is currently developing its five year strategic plan, which will support the implementation of green growth in the green cities and water thematic areas.
  • The Intern will participate in desktop research related to this process, and work closely with GGGI’s local team to design a set of interventions that leverage Jordan’s successes in the renewable energy sector, for success in other sectors.
  • This is a three-fourth month posting working full time within the Ministry of Environment in Amman.
  • Ideal candidates are:
  1. Master’s or Ph.D. students working in the areas of urban development, engineering, economics, politics, law, international relations, or other similar areas.
  2. Currently interested in or studying topics related to green growth and urban development such as: solid waste management approaches, including waste to resource solutions; sustainable transport, eco-mobility, public transportation; integrated water resource management.
  3. Familiar with the renewable energy landscape of Jordan, including the challenges and opportunities for renewable energy finance, the history and process of legal and regulatory development in the energy sector, and/or an understanding of the implications for renewable energy expansion in Jordan.
  4. Fluent in English. Strong English writing skills are essential (writing test required). Fluency in Arabic a strong asset.
  5. Familiar with the structure and functions of various government institutions in Jordan.

 

  • In addition to the delivery of issue briefs, reports or presentations during the internship, candidates will be expected to deliver a monthly brief of accomplishments, and a final report of findings and reflection as deliverables for the internship,
