Organizational Setting

The objective of the Department of Nuclear Energy is to foster the efficient and safe use of nuclear power by supporting interested Member States in improving the performance of nuclear power plants, the nuclear fuel cycle, and the management of nuclear wastes; in catalysing innovation in nuclear power and fuel cycle technologies; in developing indigenous capabilities for national energy planning; in deploying new nuclear power plants; in preserving and disseminating nuclear information and knowledge; and in advancing science and industry through improved operation of research reactors.

 

The Division of Energy Planning and Nuclear Information and Knowledge comprises the Planning and Economic Studies Section, Nuclear Knowledge Management Section and the Nuclear Information Section. The Division is responsible for strengthening capacities in energy and nuclear power planning, building capacities to manage nuclear knowledge and provide knowledge management services to interested member states, and to procure and provide printed and electronic information in the area of nuclear science and technology.

The Nuclear Information Section (NIS) consists of the IAEA Library Unit, the INIS Unit and the Systems Development and Support Group. It foster the exchange of scientific and technical information on the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology; increases awareness in Member States of the importance of maintaining efficient and effective systems for managing such information; provides information services and support to Member States and to the IAEA; and assists with capacity building and training.


Main Purpose

Under the supervision of the Library Coordinator, the Library Assistant (Cataloguing) provides information services and performs descriptive cataloguing and metadata creation for various formats of materials to be added to the Library collections according to the Library and international standards.


Functions / Key Results Expected

 

  • Prepare descriptive cataloguing records and create metadata for materials to be added to the Library collection following accepted standards for bibliographic description and record format. Assist with maintaining and updating existing bibliographic metadata records available in the Library collection. Perform auxiliary cataloguing duties such as producing and applying spine labels.
  • Retrieve and perform quality control of bibliographic records originating from commercial suppliers for input into the IAEA Library collection.
  • Assist in resolving issues regarding the interpretation of descriptive cataloguing rules and practices and prepare reports according to established rules and standards on cataloguing as requested.
  • Regularly provide and promote information services at the information desk, including circulation, shelving and other related duties. Collaborate with other members of the Nuclear Information Section on identifying and developing common activities, products and services.

Qualifications, Experience and Language skills

 

  • Completed secondary education.
  • Formal training in library work and cataloguing an asset.
  • Minimum of five years of relevant working experience, of which two years is related to cataloguing in a library environment.
  • Work experience in an international environment is an asset.
  • Experience working with MARC, AACR2 and/or RDA is a plus as is knowledge/proficiency with current technology.
  • Excellent oral and written command of English. Knowledge of other official IAEA languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Russian and Spanish) is an asset.
  • English language test (level 1) and typing test (level 1) to IAEA standard.

Remuneration

The IAEA offers an attractive remuneration package including a tax-free annual net base salary starting at EUR 43257 (subject to mandatory deductions for pension contributions and health insurance), 6 weeks' annual vacation, pension plan and health insurance

Appointment is subject to a satisfactory medical report. Recruitment will be on a LOCAL BASIS only. Outside applicants are required to supply to the IAEA or to authorize it to seek all information relevant to their suitability for employment by the IAEA. Testing may be part of the recruitment process.
