SCA Background

The Swedish Committee for Afghanistan (SCA) has been working in Afghanistan since 1982, presently managing development programmes concerning Health, Education, Rural Livelihoods and Community Governance, with a total annual budget of roughly USD 40 million. The total number of staff is around 5,500. During the last 10 years SCA has undertaken a change process moving from a primarily humanitarian service delivery approach towards more of a developmental role, putting increasing emphasis on capacity development, rights-based programming and outcome orientation. The mission of SCA is to empower individuals, communities and local organizations, primarily in rural areas and with particular focus on women, girls, boys and vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities, so that they may participate fully in society and influence their own development. Scope of work:

The Orthopedic Technologist is a member of the clinic team, takes part in the examination and prescription: and advises on the design and production of the prosthetic/orthotic device. The Orthopedic Technologist reports to Orthopedic Supervisor.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Diploma in orthopedic Technology CAT 11, BSc, Orthopedic Technology will be preferred,
  • 3-4 years’ relevant orthopedic Technology experience, especially within an NGO, UN agencies or similar organization
  • Computer skill at operator level, especially with MS Office packages
  • Fluency in English and Dari and/or Pashto, both written and spoken
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Team worker, analytical, and troubleshooting skill
  • Experience of planning, reporting and budgeting
  • Ability and willingness to travel to the project sites within Afghanistan and adjust to SCA environment
  • Honest, proactive and well mannered

Main Responsibilities:

  • Participate in the clinic team, takes part in the examination and prescription, and advises on the design of the prosthetic/orthotic device interface, suspension and selection of the proper components.
  • Assists and advises on relevant aspects of pre-surgical, post-surgical, medical and therapeutic management of individuals requiring prosthetic/orthotic devices
  • Records and reports any pertinent information regarding patients/clients and their families, including a determination of expectations and needs
  • Communicates appropriate information to patients/clients and their families
  • Identifies physical and other relevant characteristics of the patient/clients
  • Formulates a range of prosthetic or orthotic designs as specified in the curriculum guidelines. This includes selection of materials, components and additional aids
  • Tasks all casts and measurement required for proper fabrication and fitting.
  • Modifies positive and /or layouts of design to obtain optimal fit and alignment
  • Carries out fitting, static and dynamic alignment and, where appropriate, preliminary training and initial check-out
  • Performs and /or supervise fabrication of the prosthesis or orthosis
  • Advises the team and participates directly in final check-out and evaluation of fit, function and cosmetic
  • Instructs the patient or family in the use and care of the device
  • Takes part in follow-up procedures as well as maintenance, repair and replacement of the appliances
  • Recognizes the need to repeat any of the identified steps in or for to optimism fit and function
  • Collaborates and consults with others engaged in the management of the patient/client
  • Is required to take part in and contribute to the process of continuing professional development of the junior technicians and assistants
  • May lecture and demonstrate to colleagues in his profession and other professionals concerned with prosthetics/orthotics and also to community and other interested groups
  • Keeps abreast of new developments concerning rosthetics/orthotics
