Background

Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The Research and Data Section is responsible for leading UN Women’s research and data agenda and for positioning UN Women as a global knowledge broader on gender equality and women’s empowerment. It produces knowledge products including UN Women flagship publications such as UN Women’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Monitoring Report.

The purpose of this internship is to provide support to the activities of the research and data specialists within the SDG Monitoring Report Team of UNWOMEN. The intern will receive overall supervision from the Research and Data Policy Specialists. 

Duties and Responsibilities

The position provides the successful candidates an opportunity to focus on a range of technical and analytical tasks, including:

  • STATA programming using large microdatasets;
  • Preparation of analytical outputs, including graphs, figures and tables with STATA and/or other analysis software;
  • Analysis of development outcomes statistics from a gender perspective;
  • Involvement in different stages of UN Women’s global report production process;
  • General project and management support, including scheduling meetings, note-taking, coordinating across authors, fact-checking, and documentation.

Functional Competencies

  • Good knowledge of quantitative research methods and experience applying quantitative methods;
  • Ability to conduct statistical analysis using STATA;
  • Technical knowledge of the subjects of development and gender statistics;
  • Ability to conduct quantitative and qualitative data compilation and analysis.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must be enrolled in a Post graduate school programme, preferably in the areas of statistics, development, gender, social sciences or related areas;
  • Interns must be in the final year of their undergraduate studies, enrolled in a graduate-level program, or a recent graduate of either an undergraduate or graduate program (in which case they must begin the internship within the first year post-graduation).

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience, part or full-time, paid or volunteer in development, research, advocacy, and policy development is an asset
  • Experience with programming and statistical analysis using STATA is required

Language:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Knowledge of other UN working languages is an advantage.

  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
